Television Bank Telebank rental

T.C.Hayes of Bearwood still operate a similar scheme today.I finally convinced my father in law last year that he could have bought a TV station with what he had put in the box on the back of the TV. In the main the sets were a bit crappy too.

Bought out by Granada in the early 80s I think. No offence, but some of their customers were the pitts. They were dear, but would rent to just about anyone with a pulse.

There were a few firms like it, one would take another piece of your furniture as a deposit, then rent it back to you on the meter to get round Gov't legislation that said you had to pay 6, or sometimes 10 months up front.

Another had a deal where you bought the TV, by installments on the meter, but if it broke down you had to pay for the repair, on the meter, with interest of course. the TV was yours, maintenance was your own problem, but you had to have it done by them.

Coulnt get away with it now.

Here's an interesting report presented by Jim Storm on the TV rental market in general and National Telebank in particular. It sounds a bit like "money for jam"!

Good old Telebank. We had a bad few years 2 years after I got married. I lost my job,we had a young child, didn't have 2 pennies to rub together. Couldn't afford a telly. We had Telebank, it was great when the tele was emptied they had their rent and we had the rest.

Frothblower, There were a lot of people in the same boat as you. Our mom and dad had one. Mom used to pay for bedding, towels etc With the money that was over after the rental was taken.

And you could have the time adjusted so you would get less viewing time for you 50p and get more money back at the end of the month. Good way of saving for Birthdays and Xmas. if you had the 50's of course:rolleyes:
