Surname misspelt

birnewcomer

proper brummie kid
My 3x grandfather was John Hanson (1828-1903) married Hannah Phillips in 1849 and ran Spring gardens pub in Floodgate St.
I believe his father was Joseph Hanson/Anson (1791-1850) and mother Hannah Westwood. Can anybody shed any light on the surname spelling and am I on the correct family tree.Much appreciated.

Spelling of names at that time could vary from record to record. Many people couldn't read or right and once they told someone their name it was down to that person how they spelt it. Also with people moving to different parts of the country accents probably played a part.

By the time people were literate even fairly close relations could be spelling their name differently. So in one sense there is no correct way.

My g g grandmother was a Richings and it was variously spelt Richings, Richens, Richins, Ritchings and others. And I have modern day relatives with some of those spellings.
