Summers Charles b1779

Martin Summers

Brummie babby
Hi,

Can anyone help with the deeper ancestry or any further information regarding the Summers Family in Birmingham Circa 1780.

I am a descendant of Charles who I believe was baptised in St Martin's in 1779. He seems to have had 2 sisters, Mary and Ann, and a brother Robert.
Charles is listed as having parents called Charles and Ann, but that is where my trail runs dry. I haven't managed to find a marriage for Charles and Ann or any other confirmed references in Warwickshire.

Charles b1779 joined the Marines and had a traceable history in Plymouth.

Regards

Martin

Hi Martin
I am a summers and a couple of my ancestors were Charles but I can only go back to a marriage in 1825 between a Charles summers and a Mary Martin he was born around 1807
Not sure if this helps you but coming forward there son was Charles as well.

Hi Colin,

I have found out a little more since my last post and there is undoubtedly a connection with your line somewhere. I have been helped by someone with the discovery of the marriage of Charles to Ann Davis in Handsworth in 1778. I notice that your Charles and Mary were also married in Handsworth. A little more digging should work this out :-)

Colin,

My line of Summers left the Birmingham area when Charles Summers b1779 joined the Marines in 1797 and don't seem to have returned. Any connection would have to have been fom before that.
That Charles' father was the Charles married in Handsworth in 1778.
Unfortunately the Handsworth records are difficult to access at the moment, but I'm sure the answer will be there.

As I understand it, these records are not available via Familysearch/Ancestry/Findmypast etc which means that you have to find some other way of accessing them. Additionally I think that the Birmingham Archives are being moved at the moment and are also effectively closed until the Autumn. The BMSGH are able to do "looks ups" for a fee, but when you are searching this is slow and not particularly practical. ( BMSGH sell a cd with transcription for Handsworth St Mary, but the data is only for:
Baptisms 1558-1625 and 1774-1830,
Marriages 1558-1625 and 1754-1812,
Burials 1558-1625 and 1774-1837
I like to have copies of original documents which really means I'll have to wait until the ( if they exist at all ).

Hi Martin
The library where the records are kept has closed and they are moving all the books and records to the new building this is probably why they are not available.

Astonian,

It seems that I am developing a need to spread my family tree! It will take me some time, but we will see what comes up!
My ancestor, Charles b1779, had a brother and 2 sisters, so I have a starting point.

Many Thanks
