Sturges(s)

Hello,

Would it be usual for the births of Dissenters' children to be record in St Martin's Parish Records without the child being baptised in St Martins?

Sarah Streeton Sturges (IGI C146215 refers) was recorded in St Martin's records. I see it just notes the birth date.... is this an indication she was not baptised in St Martin, Birmingham, but only her birth details recorded?

Hi Barbara

Civil registration was started in 1837, prior to this the church was required to record all birth's, marriage's and death's, it had been this way since 1538. Henry VIII was on the throne when the Church of England was established in 1534 so i suppose it's him we have to thank for the existance of this resource today. Scotland didn't start until 1553 and Ireland in 1634.
