STEPHENS, James - b. about 1753

Just found out that my 4 x gt.grandfather was a Boot and Shoemaker and originally from Scotland. I wonder if anyone has access to Chapmans Directory 1800 and could see if he is in there for me. I've found him in Bull Street in Wrightsons 1818, and in Pigots 1829-1839 at 62 Constitution Hill. He died in 1847 at 62 Constitution Hill and I would love to find out more about him.

Judy do you have the 1841 census entry where James is listed in Constitution hill age 88
with his daughter Maria Purdie b, 1811 Warks and his son in law James b. 1805 Scotland

James Purdie married Maria Louisa Stephens 31st December 1831 ST George.

Brilliant Alberta! I had seen the 1841 entry for James Stephens but hadn't connected the fact that his daughter and son-in-law were with him! Thank you so much for taking the trouble to check this. It puts more meat on the bones and every litte bit is a help to finding out more about him. Whether I will ever find out where he came from in Scotland is debatable but I know now that he had at least 3 daughters living in Birmingham - Maria, Eleanor, and Emelia (my 3 x gt.grandmother).

From his death certificate I found that his daughter Eleanor was the informant and present at the death.

From Emelia Mackain's will, I found that he had left her property at 64 Constitution Hill, and I am now waiting for James's will which I have just sent for. What a fantastic forum this is - just amazing the amount of help from everyone.
