Can anyone tell me anything about 'The Star' and if it is still there or when it was demolished - Thanks

The Star was on the corner of Hope St and Gooch St. This end of Gooch st was the first to go under the clearance schemes of that area, and would have been demolished around the mid sixties,

My Nan kept a pub in Gooch Street, how would I find out any further info about it?
Grateful thanks to you Brummies out there...

The 1940 Kelly's lists the following pubs in Gooch St. Surname of your nan and approximate time should narrow it down

39 Bath Tavern. Joseph Benjamin Monk
77 British Oak, Alfred William John Jenkins
210 Sir Charles Napier, Mrs Florence Francis Capewell
273 Bridge Tavern, John Ernest Matthews
225-7 Star Inn, Thomas Arthur Silcock
300-4 Clements Arms, Chas Hy Thompson

Thanks for that information Mike. I had heard of Kellys but never really knew what they were. The Clements Arms rings a bell but how do I look up other years if I'm not sure what years she was there?

I've got 1876, 1896, 1912,1921, 1940 and 1964. there is also a section for lookups in the forum. You have to enter a request on the thread of the appropriate year, and someone will look it up for you. But you will need to give surname.
Have just checked 1964 and only Bath tavern, british oak, Sir charles napier and star are listed, but none give landlord. Probably they were changing so quickly then that it wasn't worth putting them in. You'll probably have to go to the electoral rolls for them for that period

Thanks Mike. I will lookup on years 1921, 1940. It will be for the Clements Arms, licensees Arthur and Ivy Davies.

Looked in the 1921 kelly's and no luck for the Clements Arms, but have just added a 1950 kelly's to my collection and this does give Arthur Leslie Davies at the Clements Arms

Hi Mike
I am grateful to you for looking up on the Kellys for me. I was sure it was the Clements Arms when you gave me the list of pubs. I have other relatives who have kept other pubs - watch out for my further questions !!:)

Any time Marshell. I have some directories for neihbouring areas also if they were outside Brum, but not a good selection

Sorry as far as i can remeber it was demolished mid sixties, i was only a child then, somone else maybe able to give a more precise year.

Not too sure whether it's a help or not but, after talking to my Nan (Violet Booth), I understand that my Great Uncle ran a pub called The Star for a while although she reckons it was Hope Street. His name was Freddie Monnington and apparently he also ran 'The Electric' on Belgrave Road for a while.

I remember the Star on Gooch St well, i have no idea who ran it,it was on the corner of Hope St and Gooch St,it was demolished late 60s i left the area in 1967, it was still there but come down about 1969, they sold really nice steak pies in the outdoor
