i just heard that the council are going to build part of the vincent street for the games that is unbeleivable i cannot imagine what the people think
its gonna be encrouching on the tennants of the light thorne avenue estate so to my caltulation it will between the cut and the estate houses
i can only forsee that the tennants of lightthorne avenue will be moved out to make accomdation to live in for the athletes it ,s like a little athletes village the way the house are there to think we used to kick and for gaaround there when we was kids and when the old houses was there pre war house we used to go down the cellars looking for war helmets
and gas maskes and sovenairsand when they was rebuilding the whole of ladywood it was our play ground on the building sites

Hi, I'm currently researching into my great grandfather George William Whitehouse who lived at 289 St Vincent St in 1939 England and Wales Register. At the time he is listed as being a Hairdresser Assistant, so I'm looking to see if anyone has any information about whether their was any hairdressers or barbers at the time in that area so I could pin point where he might of worked? Also any photos of the area would be great too.

Thanks

291-299 St. Vincent Street 1964. It seems like it was once next door to a newsagents, but of course I cannot say what was there in 1939, The 1964 photo is prior to demolition I guess.

it means that george henry or poss harry whitehouse was a greengrocer at 289 st vincent st

Thanks for the reply! So does that me 289 could be his home but he was a green grocer? Sorry just trying to wrap my head around how it works.

Just confusing too as I know who George Harry Whitehouse would of been, but on the 1939 census he's down as a garage mechanic at that address

It is possible that he was a mechanic, but he had a business as a greengrocer run by someone else, possibly his wife.
