Hi,

I have an entry found on IGI :-

John Shepperd DOB - 11.8.1809, Baptism 26.12.1809, Death 25.4.1810 - John was baptised at St Martins, would he have been buried at St Martins also, any advice would be greatly appreciated

Kind regards

Dianne

Diane I can confirm that Johnwas buried at St Martins.
St Martins was closed for burials 1848. In 1880 the churchyard was laid out as a park.

Hi Wendy,

Thanks for your reply - I'm not sure how to go about this - is there a graveyard at st martins - I pass there almost every week and for the life of me I cannot recall a graveyard - where would I find any headstone etc.

Many thanks again for any advice/info you can give me

Thanks a million

Dianne :):):):):)

Sorry, there is no longer a graveyard at St Martins. Most of the graves probably didn't have headstones, some were removed in 1880 when it was laid out as a park. A lot of the graveyards in the city this happened to, like St Martins, St Phillips and St Pauls and the remains were removed to cemeteries.

Many thanks for you reply Wendy,

If John was buried in 1810 and the graveyard closed in 1848 is it possible that
other family members were buried in the same grave. If so how would I find out who else could have been buried there

Regards

Dianne

Diane thats a difficult one. If the family were buisness people there would possibly be a family grave. If not it's more likely they would be in a public grave. For which there would not have been a headstone at this date. To find if others are ther you would have to search the St Martins burial registers.

Thanks again Wendy for your reply - I am going to Library Tuesday evening so I will have a look for various family members that could have been buried with John.

I am also sending you a PM

Regards

Dianne
