St Martin’s Board School Park Street Board School

I’ve been looking for this school for some and have finally located it. It seems to have a very changeable history as far as names go over a relatively short period of time. It started out as St Martin’s in Allison Street. Then a replacement St Martin’s opened in Park Street (Allison St was closed down). When transferred to the B’ham School Board it became Park Street. To add to confusion it was closely tied to Meriden St Board School. Then it may have become part of the Floodgate Street School.

This might be of interest for those with ancestors who attended the school. British History Online says:
PARK STREET BOARD SCHOOL. St. Martin's Sch., Park St., opened c. 1871–2. St. Martin's Sch., Allison St., was closed on its opening. A.a. 1873: 208. In 3 depts. (B, G, I) in 1874; fees 2d.– 4d. Transferred to Birm. Sch. Bd. as Park St. Bd. Sch. 1879. Fees all 1d. and many children admitted free, so that attendance was much higher after transfer. In 1883 Meriden St. Bd. Sch., q.v., was opened to relieve overcrowding here. The Sch. Bd. reports imply that Park St. Sch. remained open as well but the Ed. Dept. apparently considered Meriden St. as a replacement.(1, 21) It closed either 1883 or with Meriden St. in 1891.

MERIDEN STREET BOARD SCHOOL. Opened 1883 by Birm. Sch. Bd. in building belonging to governors of Grammar Sch. In one dept. Fees all 1d.Said in Sch. Bd. report to be an extension (accom. 397) of Park St. Bd. Sch. which was overcrowded, but treated in M. of Ed. files and Ed. Dept. lists as a continuation of Park St., accom. 1,314.Possibly this figure includes both buildings. Closed 1891, on opening of Floodgate St. Bd. Sch.

This is how St Martin’s School appeared on Goad’s 1889 Insurance Map just a few years before its closure. This was the second St Martin’s School. Viv.

The school’s earlier history. It was probably also known as St Martin’s Ragged School Well Lane. From British History Online it says:

ST. MARTIN'S RAGGED SCHOOL, Well Lane. Opened 1848. Presumably identical with St. Martin's Sch., Allison St. In 1850 it was called St. Martin's Well Lane, Allison St. (but not 'ragged') and in 1852 it was called also the Well Lane Ragged Sch. In 1858 St. Martin's Sch. was in Allison St., near Well Lane, and in 1865, as St. Martin's Sch., Well Lane, Allison St., it was called a ragged sch. As St. Martin's Sch., Allison St., it received annual grants from 1866: possibly by now not distinctively 'ragged'. A.a. 1869: 147, standards I–V only, in 2 depts. Closed c. 1871–2 on opening of St. Martin's Sch., Park St.

ST. MARTIN'S SCHOOL, Allison Street. Presumably identical with St. Martin's Ragged School, Well Lane, q.v.
