St Marks Church, Washwood Heath Road

A recognisable view of the church, little changed. I notice there's a stone plaque in the wall alongside the pavement -perhaps a foundation stone, although it looks a bit small for that. Also the church clocks seem to have been placed in an odd position, covering some features - presumably an afterthought.

Tge large house alongside to the right bears a crest over the entrance - the rectory ??

The row of terrace houses just in view on the right have a plaque naming 'The Limes' and, I think, dated 1878 - so built before the church was constructed.

From British History Online :

ST. MARK, Washwood Heath (Washwood Heath Rd.), was licensed for public worship as a chapel of ease of St. Saviour's, Saltley, in 1890.The church, which is of red brick with stone dressings and consists of chancel, nave, aisles, and stone tower with spire, was consecrated in 1899. The architect was J. A. Chatwin. A parish was assigned out of St. Saviour's in 1907, when the living became a vicarage in the gift of the Vicar of St. Saviour's. Part of the parish was taken to form part of the parish of St. Mary and St. John, Shaw Hill (1929).

Hi Alberta,

I remember that house in the 1980's, it was then a second hand shop run by a very nice Irish chap called Mick.
I believe later it became a Muslim Centre.

Kind regards
Dave

Hi Alberta, I am local. The property hasn't become a Muslim centre yet, that's further down the road. Just wondering if you had any later information on this property from 1980 to the current date.

I lived at 262 from 1961 to 1966 then the larger flat at 260 until 1967.
262 was the first next to the railway and it was over a carpet shop belonging to Ernie Lucas , 260 was alarger flat also owned by Mr Lucas but the shop downstairs was a babyware shop.
I don;t know what the buildings became in the 80s but both 260 and 262 are now a Muslim Study centre.
