St John’s Chapel Deritend

I suspect that the picture of the old chapel (and the one earlier in this thread) is a crude version of an apparently more skilfull etching, here.

All of them must have been created long after demolition. This can hardly be contemporary. (Tarmac the roadway and you could almost have a bus running down it!) I wonder if there were ever one created whilst it was still standing. Or are all these from imagination?

Demolished in 1947. Too late for John Spilsbury but perhaps worth mentioning that first port of call for [Birmingham] parish records should be the Library of Birmingham [in Birmingham Diocesan Record Office] and yes they do have the records for St Johns. Recent/current records will probably still be at the church concerned; in my experience churches are usually helpful with enquiries but you may need to make a visit.

Parish records for St John seem to be online at Ancestry. But they start from 1700.

Hi, Is there a thread on here for Deritend, St John the Baptist Church. Nearly all Wifes older relatives were married there. Think it was somewhere around where Coach Station is now.They all lived around Cheapside.

hi could anyone tell me anything about st johns chapel before it was rebuilt in early 1700s,also were i can find parish regiters late 1600s as a james spilsbury was curate of this parish until his death in 1699.thank you from john spilsbury

This building of 1735 replaced an earlier chapel of 1380. By 1939 it had ceased to be used for worship and its fate was sealed when it was damaged by enemy bombing in 1940. It was demolished in 1947. The Bull Ring Trading Estate now occupies the site. This site has now been passed for rebuilding . I wonder if the have taken down the 3 plaques.
