Jordan's Brewery was based in Oldbury and this is the only pub picture I have found where their ales were sold. Its a lovely pic taken in 1912 but sadly I don't know the pub name which was in Smith Street, Hockley.

I would be grateful if somebody could do a Kelly's check and tell me the names of the pubs in Smith Street which will at least be a start, hopefully there weren't too many!

Thanks, Bob
(REPLACEMENT but think it was same as original))

I'm sure the oval plate above the entry next to the pub says 'Court 2' which should help find the address...

On a recheck I have come up with the St George's Tavern in Harford St and this is on the corner of Smith St.

The old eyes are wearing out.

Well done once again Phil. I've just tracked down the original source and it is definitely labelled as Smith St. Since I can see Harford St is at one end and assuming Court 2 would be at the end of the street, added to the surprising fact that there is nothing else in Smith St, seems to add up to the St George's. It's only circumstantial and wouldn't stand up in court (there's an old joke in there somewhere) but it will do for me. Hopefully its a new one for your pub folder as well Phil. Thanks
Bob

Glaciermint, it's a strange thing, but there are no pubs or outdoors listed in the Kelly's Directory, 1913 for Smith Street, Hockley, but there were two street corner pubs listed under the crossing streets -
Harford Street: No 38 was at the west corner of Smith Street, called the St George's Tavern, licensee Thos. Albrighton.
Hockley Street: No 134 was at the north corner of Smith Street, called the Queen's Head, licensee Thomas E Price.
There were no pubs at the corners no corner pubs at either end (Great Hampton Row and Well Street).
So it's a simple choice, one or the other.

 I was hoping the St George's was the only one! Well at least its narrowed down to one of two!
Thanks all for your help (even those who got a little lost):)

What you need to do is start a full scale search for photo's of both pubs to compare.

Anybody want to volunteer, I'm too busy looking for ones of two seperate "Vines".

Phil

The St George's Tavern, Harford st / Smith St and The Queens Head Hockley St / Smith St. Good Luck.

Phil

Came across this thread when I was tidying up. Below are maps c 1889 showing detail of the Queens Head and St George's Tavern (named as Inn on the map). The Queens Head has no narrow alleyway by the side of it (though it has a wide goods entrance next door), whereas the St Georges Tavern, assuming it ran into the next building on the emap, does have a narrow entrance. I think this confirms that it was the St George's Tavern in the picture, and have retitled thread accordingly
