Has any body got any information on the history St Catherines RC Church and School Bristol Street.
My Father and all his Brothers and Sisters went to the school and I can remember attending the old church in the early sixties.
There was also a social club attached to the church and the old school was at the back.
St Catherines Social club had a very good football team in the 40s they played in the Kings Norton league

Hello,

Is St. Catherine's by the 'Horse fair' or is that another St. Catherine's?

My gt grandparents got married at St. Catherine of Siena in 1919 - i have been told that this was knocked down and the new St Catherine's built in its place.

Hello, this is a photo inside St Catherine's, it was my parents wedding day July 1949. My dad and his siblings went to St Catherine's school. His mother Agnes Flanagan was the oldest parishioner when she died in 1972 age 86. regards Margaret

Hi,

There's a nice drawing of St Catherine's Horse Fair in Roy Thornton's book 'Lost Buildings of Birmingham'. It's the only one I've seen of the outside of the church. I hadn't seen this book before although it was published in 2009.

A late reply but I've only just found this forum! My Father, John Whelan, was involved with the St Catherine's football team in 1947-8 when they won the Kings Norton League. The Birmingham Mail are running an article with a photo of the team possibly tomorrow as I have several copies of the photo and would love to be able to pass them on the the players or their descendents.

You truly learn something every day. I worked in Irving Street before the new church was built and had assumed the old one was a victim of war damage. I should have known our Councillors had a hand in it.

Hi luscinia The Kings norton league dosen't seem to exist any more but they may have combined with another league the county fa should know but it's a very long shot that any records remain , you have probably already tried but here's a link to the county FA .The only other thing I can suggest is when the library reopens in September to look in the back copies of the mail or the dispatch or mercury if you have the date of the final game it should be pretty easy to find if it was reported

Oh what a brilliant idea! Thank you. I'd never thought of that!! Perhaps the journalist who wrote the report could help too looking in the archives.

Bristol Street school 1950 corner of Irving Street a Bristol Street school stood on the corner of Irvine Street next to original St C atherines.jpgbank next door then St Catherines your youth club would have been here somewhere

H iLuscinia have you tried looking for the names in the local schools and look for descendants through Friends Reunited possibly starting with local RC schools , you might ask the person your meeting which school they went to . I'm happy you've at least had one result after your long search there was a St Catherines school in Windmill Street regards Bernie

Thanks for your suggestions, Bernie. I've just heard that a man has got in touch with the journalist whose Dad was very involved with the team and who knows most of the names so I'm going to ring him tonight to find out more. It's all very exciting!

I think St.Catherine of Sienna[The Original Church] was pulled down in the early 1960's to make way for the Bistol Street and Queensway we use today,The Ringway was also part of that development. St Catherines school was originally opened in Windmill Street in the late 1870's and for some time they only took boys. girls were allowed but not untill around 1884/5. The church stood next to or very near a pub called The Red Cow that too dissapeared.8 of my family were baptised at St.Catherines. The Horsefair where St.Catherines stood was only called the horsefair from around 1870 when the horse dealers were moved from the main market up to Brick Kiln Lane which is what we knoHorsefair.jpg as The Horsefair. If you look at the bottom left corner of the picture the railings are the railings of St.Catherine of Sienna.
