Does anyone know anything about "my" Srawley's or whether they are related to Sandra F's Srawley family above?

My grandfather was John ("Jack") Srawley born 1886 in Birmingham. His father was Henry Charles Srawley born about 1846 in Birmingham, his mother was Harriett Srawley (nee Lymath) born about 1849 in Birmingham & my grandfather had five elder siblings named Harry, Harriett L, James R, William E & Samuel G Srawley. In the 1891 Census they lived at 331 Bolton Road, Bordesley, Birmingham & in the 1901 Census they were at 173 Bolton Road.

In his WWI Service Record, my grandfather's home address is given as 248 Banks/Bankes & Bank Road, Small Heath, Birmingham (I assume they are all the same residence but don't know whether these are simple writing errors or whether Banks Road was renamed Bankes Road or Bank Road!).

My grandfather married Florence Sadkie in 1931.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Thanks for your reply Sandra F.

Do any of the Srawleys in your family tie in to any of my Srawley's listed above?

Thanks.

Srawley Family

My G.G.Grandmother, Elizabeth Clarke (nee Tune) left half her estate in 1903 to her son in law William George Srawley, husband of her daughter,Alice. On the 1901 census he was a lamp maker employer and they lived at 24 Springfield Avenue in Balsall Heath with their son Frank.

For many years afterwards they lived at 5 Melrose Ave, Woodfield Road, Balsall Heath although their workshop seems to have been at 185 Cheapside in Digbeth. William died in 1931.

They seem to have been on the other side of the city to your Srawleys but with such an unusual name there must have been some relationship.

Good hunting!

Thanks for yoyr reply Sandra F.

Although not immediately apparent, something makes me think there must be some connection between your Srawleys & mine:
* You mention that William George Srawley was a lamp maker employer in the 1901 Census. I see he married Alice in 1886 & Ancestry.com has a birth in about 1863 for a William G Srawley (spouse Alice Srawley) from the 1901 Census, which I assume is him.
* My great grandfather Henry Charles Srawley was born about 1846. In the 1890 Birmingham directory, he is listed as a hardware dealer at 331 Bolton Road, Small Heath, Birmingham & a year later, in the 1891 Census, he is listed (again at 331 Bolton Road) as a lamp maker employer, the same as your William George in the 1901 Census!
* In the 1901 Census, I see that your William George is living at 24 Springfield Avenue in Balsall Heath whereas my Srawleys have moved to 173 Bolton Road, maybe because my great grandfather died in 1899. Balsall Heath is only 1 mile from Small Heath so they were quite close to each other.

My great grandfather therefore appears to be about 17 years older than your William George, they lived not far from each other & they appear to have had the same trade, maybe running through the Srawley family.

Do you have any details of any Srawley relatives of your William George (eg father, grandfather, siblings, uncles)? I wonder for example whether he might be the nephew of my great grandfather.

Incidentally, you may be interested in my thread "Banks/Bankes/Bank Road, Small Heath, Birmingham posted by me on 16th November, especially the reply by Mikejee on 17th November which lists various Srawleys in the Birmingham directories of 1890 & 1900, including your William George Srawley.

I look forward to hearing from you.

My William George Srawley was born in 1863, son of William George, born 1835. In 1881 they were at 21 Ladypool Lane, Balsall Heath and all those of working age were lamp makers.

I think the problem is that nobody taking the census knew how to spell Srawley so it could be Sawley or even Shirley! I have found a Charles Sawley, lamp maker, living at Camden Street in 1841 with his father also Charles, I think this must be a Srawley family and certainly they stuck to making lamps through the generations.

But that's all I can find out.
