Do you remember the old Spot the Ball competitions? Up in the loft this afternoon - have to clear it before Mr Brown's free insulation people call this Friday - I came across this old Delta News letter. I was working at Jame Booth Aluminium in Kitts Green at the time. Can you see the good-looking chap receiving a 10 guinea cheque?

My Mom worked for the BIRMINGHAM MAIL for a number of years on SPOT THE BALL she had to place the grid with the chosen ball marked on it (it was the ball placed chosen by a seleb) I think her section head was a lady called CONNIE?
I ALSO HAD TWO COUSINS & ONE OF THERE GIRLS WORKING FOR THE MAIL AT THAT TIME

Hi,
That has evoked some memories.

Whenever we think of our Grandmother we quote her -
" I put my x in that exact spot"
She thought she should have won every week.
The following week the picture was reprinted with the winning results, However the picture was a lot smaller, so you could never just tell where you had put your X.
She did win once , about a hundred pound , a fair sum in 1967/8 . She shared half with my Grandfather and Rigged me and my Cousin out.
My outfit was florencent green and orange - it was flower power days with Scott McKenzinie in Pop Charts with- If you are going to San Francisco , be sure to wear some flowers in your hair ... She then took us to Henry's department store . We pleaded with her to buy us some - Cow bells . Thats right a bell around our neck on a long chain
I thought I was the Bees knees in Ward End park on the swings.

Not long after my father was stopped by the Police in the early hours of the morning by the Adelphi Picture House in Hay Mills ( he wasnt speeding, there was little traffic about then ) He was asked where he was heading . He replied " he had missed the last post and was hand delivering his Spot The ball Coupon to the Evening Mail "

Am I correct in thinking that at one time Henry's was where W. H. Smith is now - in Union passage and Union Street

Readers Digest still do the occasional spot the ball contest and I had the good fortune to win it a couple of years ago.

The prize was a new VW Golf or £16,000 cash. I took the cash of course. E.

I remember Spot the Ball, in the 60's my Mom & me won £168.00 between us.
It seemed like a fortune.

Perhaps you also remember the fashion contests in The People newspaper.
In his autobiography, Robert Robinson (he who used to be on Ask The Family) tells of the time when his first job was on that newspaper and he had to judge the fashions! Actually, he didn't judge them at all - he collated all the entries and found which combination had been chosen by the least number of entrants and announced that as the winning answer.
This then ensured that the prize money was distributed between the least number of people, thereby making the largest possible prize for each of the winners which made the contest look more appealing.
This meant that it was best to make your entry start with the worst and put the best last if you wanted any chance of winning!
