Smith Lois

maryt

knowlegable brummie
I had some success with the Smith side of my family a few years ago, and found quite a lot about them. But now I have come to a stop with Lois. She was the informant on my great-grandad's death certificate in 1952 and was his grandaughter, living at Markham Road, B'ham 14. However, I had never heard of her until finding the certificate and my one remaining cousin remembers her but no other details, even as to how old she may have been. I checked the electoral roll for 1952 but she is not listed as at the given address and the names of the occupiers mean nothing to me. The only surviving children on the 1911 census were all girls - Lois could have been illegitimate - and there are two children who died before then. Difficult to find whether they were boys or girls with the surname! So, this is an attempt to find her or some information about her. The Smith side of the family are my next genealogy project.

Hi Mary, brave lass researching "Smith,s", equal to climbing Mount Everest (Without oxygen)

The "Lois Smith" you mention may not have lived at her Grandfathers address,,or was not old enough to be on Electoral Register,,
Lois may not be her "real" name ? could be a Middle name or a name she prefers & told the person writing out the certificate ?
Most certificates,,Birth/Death/Marriage have a mistake &/or a little white lie or two.

Advise you to check your GGgrandads Elec Roll 1945-1951 to trace further occupants (Including Lois?)
Good luck John Y

Following on from Ladylindas query are you sure it is B14 not B44 - there is a markham Road in Sutton Coldfield/New Oscott, just of Monmouth Drive.

Thank you all. SisterSue61, it was 1952, would B44 have existed then? Ladylinda, The writing on the certificate is beautiful cursive writing, but not always easy to read. Could it be Marsham Road, it is up the Maypole end of Kings Heath. (Doing this from memory, too lazy to go and get my records!!) John, my cousin remembers her as Lois, she is on the certificate as Lois N (or M!). There are some Lois Ns and Ms born but I have nothing to go on with any other names or addresses. She doesn't appear to be living near Great grandad in Selly Oak. I can access the electoral rolls on our library edition of Ancestry so it could be a case of spending a couple of hours in the library (I live in Yorkshire - will have an excuse to come back to Brum to the Central Library to look at paper editions). Thank you all for suggestions. It would be great if Lois was on here, or someone who knew her!

Mary, don't make a trip to the library now, if you type in new library on the search, you will see the pictures of the new library which has been built - it is a Marmite building as far as the forum members are concerned, either love it or hate it - and the archives from the current library are in the process of being transferred to the new one, so there is no access to the records for the forseeable future!!

Marsham Rd makes more sense if it's B14.
It's near where I grew up, opposite where Sladepool Farm Rd meets the Alcester Rd.

hi maryt as far as i know the electoral rolls..marriage looks ups ..news paper reports..maps etc are still available to view on the 6th floor..its only the archive material section that has totally closed but as sue has already said the library have now started boxing up all their material for the move to the new library so i would advise that you give them a phone call to see just what is available because as time goes on it will be less and less and could save you a wasted journey..new library opens next september...

In the 1945 Electoral Roll there's a Leslie V. Smith living at 125 Marsham Road, Kings Heath along with Rosa W. & Emily B. Smith.

Births Jun 1933
Lois N Smith mmn Robinson Birmingham 6d 508

Marriages Sep 1958
Lois N SMITH married Derek S HYDE Birmingham 9c 1674

Have looked on electoral roll for 1960,but the couple are not on there. There are 5 Hyde/Smith births between 1960-1971 in Birmingham.

Yo Maryt & good sleuthing fellow postees,,

Just an addittion,, Lois N born 1933 would have been 20 in 1952,,, I think the Electoral(register) Voting age was 21
so she would not appear at Grandads address even if she lived there Or at her parents house,
Cheers all John Y
