SMITH, Lilian Jessie - Help needed pleeeze

rowan

Born a Brummie
Can anyone help please in the search for LILIAN JESSIE SMITH........... I know the dreaded SMITH!!!! sorry.

She was born in Southwark London in 1880 to parents JEMIMA (nee ANCIENT) & Thomas Smith.

We have traced her, via the census & baptism to 1891 when she is listed as age 10 living with her family in 22 Suffield Road Newington.

At sometime she went out to SOUTH AFRICA where it is said she married (maybe to a FAULKS) & they settled there (may have been in DURBAN) & had at least 2 children. I cannot find a marriage for her in this country & word in the family is she seems to have gone to South Africa in her late teens.

There are a few family trees on A******* claiming the same family as ours but the Lilian Jessie they have is not the correct person (they have spouse HEIB & they went to Australia)

Her sister ALICE JEMIMA HERBERT (nee SMITH b. 1869) went out to see her when she (Alice) was about 80 yrs old. Would there be any travel records for her going there?

I seem to be stuck now as to where to go to from here, so can I ask for your help.......... please?

I thank you in advance.:cupcake:

Although there is a Mrs A Herbert and Alice Herbert going to S Africa in1903, the ages aren't right - 57 and 17 respectively, so I don't think these are the people you are looking for. I searched from 1890 to 1965. By my calculation, you are looking for someone who travelled in 1949.
I did search for direct to S Africa - it is always possible that she went via somewhere else!

Rowan, there is a Miss L Smith, occupation domestic, going from London to Cape Town S A on the Gaul steamship, departing on 24th June 1903. Her age is listed as 24, approx d-o-b 1879. A possibility and the closest I can see to your info.

Thank you both so much leslam & Sue.

It could be "our" Lilian & if it is she must have married in South Africa so maybe that will be my next move to look for but I don't know how to do that

But never fear, I am really grateful to you both have

If you type "South Africa passenger lists" into Google, there is a list of places you could look, including one for Rootsweb forum.
Hopefully one of those will be of use....
