View attachment 62822About 1900 and we are looking at The Bull's Head on the corner of The Horse Fare and Smallbrook Street.

The same location but it is now 1912 and The Bull has been demolished and rebuilt. It was quite a large establishment with many of the staff living in. It also provided bedrooms for guests.

A great pic of Smallbrook Street in 1949...check out the advertising slogan for Sword and Robb. Very clever...

... the Malt Shovel Inn on Smallbrook Street as I have this further tagged drawing of it, it must have been a popular place for artists.

Here is a never seen before photo of the Scala cinema Smallbrook Street after it's closure and imminent demolition. I have posted this on the demolition thread but thought it would be nice to post it here.

The information I have says the Scala Cinema, Smallbrook St, opened March 14th 1914 with Confederates in Crime and it had seating for 800 and price of admission was 6d & 1/- . It closed on June 4th 1960 showing the films Teenager in Love (X) & The Leech Woman (X).

The cinema that was built to replace it was the private Compton Cinema in the 60's it was later enlarged and rebuilt as The Scala Super Cinema and opened in 1964 in 1970 it was taken over by Odeon Cinemas and renamed The Odeon Queensway.

I do seem to recall a conversation with someone from the local council who told me they like to preserve the road/street name

if and where possible. For example Smallbrook Street became Smallbrook Ringway.

WW2 bomb damage in Smallbrook Street but the Sydenham Hotel on the corner of Pershore St/Edgbaston St looks undamaged.

A modern view from approximately a similar position but the corner where the Sydenham stood is behind the part of the building where the bus has stopped.

In a quiet moment I have uploaded this picture - loads of vehicles - I did google this so I know its Smallbrook Street and it was demolished 1960s for the ring road ( but feel free to tell me if I am wrong) .

George Gosling's - Ye Olde Pie Shoppe - Smallbrook Street.
Address in Trade Directories given as 1 and 75 Smallbrook Street.Smallbrook St - #1 and 75 - George Goslings Pie Shop.jpg

May not be the same place but 1868 Kellys has this entry for Smallbrook Street.

The same directory has this entry for Congreve Street.

I think it was a pie shop selling Goslings Pies not a shop run by Mr Gosling.
John Bosley still listed in 1883 and 1890 directory. However, there is no pie shop at 71 Smallbrok Street.

Not from a newspaper but from the book, Birmingham at work by Douglas, Alton. Love this one…“One of the best-remembered advertising slogans in the city! Smallbrook Street, 7th September 1949.”

I've created this thread about Smallbrook Street from all the above contributions (posts 1 - #24, thanks all) - these were posted on other threads and now copied here. We didn't appear to have a thread dedicated to this street.

An image of the junction of Smallbrook and Dudley Streets in 1867.
