Hi all

I have found a relation listed as a shopkeeper and at the time of the listing he was living at 27 Nechells Park Road.

Would this address of been residential or a business.

....quite possible as many folk did he lived on the premises and maybe used the front room as a shop....my grandparents did this but most of mine ran pubs or chip shops
:D

Kat - if possible include a date as sometimes usage changed over time. However, as Lyn said premises were often used as both.

In 1902, William Henry Strawbridge was listed as a shopkeeper. I forgotten the date, I got a bit excited!

The shop would have been among this group of shops, roughly by the second car on the left. At the time of this photo it was a men's outfitters. As you can see all the shops had living accommodation and most of them would have started out as just houses, but over the years turned over to trade. All I can tell you for sure was in the 60's some of the shopkeepers lived over the shops, some rented the living accommodation out and some was used as storage or empty.

Hi Phil, that's amazing, thank you. Roughly what year would that photo have been taken?

As I don't know the area, would it be possible to see a map?

kat the date of that photo was 1952 just a thought but as william was there in 1902 its possible he was there in 1901 so if you can find him there on the 1901 census it may just tell you what the shop sold....

If it's William Henry Strawbridge, son of William & Elizabeth, he was living in Waterloo Road (Smethwick?) listed as Fruiterer Salesman.

In Kelly's 1900 no. 27 is not listed and in 1905 it is listed as Walsh Bros outfitters. There are no year's inbetween online.
1901 census is Charles Spurgeon Drapers manager + wife and 2 children.

I used 1905 to paste below. Red marks 27.

Fabulous Info, thank you all who posted.

It looks like it may take a bit of working out. The only census I have is 1911.

I will compare everyone's info and my info tomorrow and I will post what info I have, perhaps the answer is there but I can't see it

On one of his children's birth certs after 1902 he is described as a chauffeur!

If I have the right person then I think he had a variety of jobs. On his marriage in 1902 to Elizabeth he is a "waiter", on William Stanley's baptism he is a "shopkeeper", on his son Graham's in 1908 he is a "traveller" , on the 1891 census he is an "assistant groom", and on 1901 census he is a "fruiterer salesman: on his own account", on 1911 census he is a "carter - brewers" and, as you say, on Frederick's baptism he is a"chauffeur". If they are all true then at least you know he was a worker!

Thank you all for your help in obtaining some info.

I still haven't looked in detail, I have been a bit under the weather.

Pjm, I think all of your findings relate to him. I remember seeing the same info. Yes he was obviously a worker!

I will have a good look later on, I've just popped on here quickly.

xx
