Can any of you good brummies help me with the below.
1-I remember, in 1959, my mother taking me to a shop somwhere on the edge of town to pick up a pair of shoes and socks with a voucher given to me by the school. I have always believed that the charity behind this was the daily mail, but friends today insist that they gave away boots only, and it is far more likely to have been the Birmingham evening mail. Can you shed any light?
2- In the same year People in the Hockley and Aston Area were moving on to new estates.Where would they have been and what new council house estates were being built back then?
3-What were the licencing hours for pubs in the 50's,Did they change at anytime during the decade? Need answers to all these ASAP.Please help folks.
Sorry! another just occured to me.4-Any of you remember the cornishman express? I am pretty sure it left snow hill at 10 o'clock am, and the train from cornwall arrived in the evening. anyone sure of the times? atb John.

Hi John.

That brought back memories. Icknield street School uniform was daily mail boots, which we collected from Digbeth Police Station. We also got a shirt, a jumper, and a pair of socks, but who provided those I cannot remember, but I do remember we all looked the same in our "charity" uniform.:)

Hi,

I remember going for boots and socks from Allison St at the back of Digbeth Police Stn, and also at Crawford Street Saltley.

I think pub closing time in the 50's was 10.30, pm and 10,00pm on a Sunday and they brought in the 10 minute drinking up time around the early sixties. Dont hold me to that though because I was quite young at the time (only about 70).

A couple of the new Council Estates being built at that time were, Castle Vale, Kingshurst and Chemsley Wood if that is any good to you.

To "Goingforit" re: people leaving Hockley for new estates

We lived in Icknield Street and were allocated a prefab in 1948. The prefabs were located in Erdington, just off College Road. They were really great having their own front and back gardens, a fitted cooker and fridge and separate bathroom and indoor toilet. My friend and I have many happy memories of the time we spent there.

digbeth police station

i remember going to the police station. when i was a kid ,we ,all the family that was .went there on haydays and holidays .easter, xmas etc , to have new rig outs .we loved it .the seargent used to take us all downstairs in the celar ,which probably was an old cell rooms. and measure us all up for our gear . the seargeants name was mr . lawrence . he reminded me of the famous magician david nixon ,at the time. and he was magic because we loved this man who gave us knew clothes . it was for one parent familys at that time ,and all the clothes were shelved in rows, we had tuff shoes as i remember the name on the boxes ,the year was around 1962 it was our grand day out very exciting for us kids ha ha .the money was donated from the digbeth police fund .the police used to donate from there wages too. ah those were the days.we would all pile down these steps that had glitter in them, old stone steps it was a spiral staircase. and down stairs there was a bare light bulb, hanging from the ceiling. we would see seats in the wall where we had to sit and wait first. and there were other familys .and always a policeman mopping the floor whistling some tune then we would be called to the aladins cave.ha ha and sit on small benches we would be measured up .eldest to the smallest .oh what excitment .:Dthe times we used to live in .

What a lovely account of the time. I am sure someone will have a picture or even share your memories.
