Sheldon Family Of Equestrians, Victorian Entertainers From B'ham

Brummie babby
On the night of the 1881 Census, a family of Sheldons, James, 48, born in Birmingham, his wife Caterline (sic) also born in B'ham, son Alfred, 13, born in Berlin, son Charles, 11, born in Lubeck, Germany, and daughter Frances, 6 months, born in Amsterdam, Holland, were in lodgings in Stoke upon Trent.
According to that week's issue of the Staffordshire Advertiser, they were the "famed Sheldon Family of Equestrians" and they were topping the bill at the Imperial Cirque theatre alongside "the vampires Thomas and James". Posters for the show described it thus: "Beautiful Horse, Artistic Riders, Charming Lady Artists, Well-bred Animals, Astounding Acrobats and Comical Clowns."
I've search extensively for more information about this unusual family. Does anyone have any further knowledge of them?

They obviously travelled (as equestrians?) across Europe having children born in different countries. Be interesting to find out more. Hopefully members will turn up some info for you Xpresso. Viv.

have you tried searching the online british newspaper archives...very good chance the family received reviews etc

Yes I've tried the British Newspaper Archive but drew a blank. Having said that, the search engine on their site is totally ineffective for anything other than the most basic of searches.

You might have seen it already but there's a baptism record for Charles on familysearch as Carl Friedrich Bernhard Sheldon. Father James, mother Katharine Gotze.

There's also a death record that seems to be related - for a Rose Scheldon in Rotterdam 18 Feb 1912. Father listed as James, mother Katharina Gatze

Thank you MWS. I must confess I had limited my searches to UK records. I will investigate those possibilities.
