Scott John of 109 Coventry St

KJSScott

knowlegable brummie
I have traced my Great grandparents back to 109 Coventry Street, this is were my Grandad was born in 1892.
My Great grandads name was John Scott and his wife was Mary Scott formerly Donoghue.
Our Family is Catholic so I assume my Great grandmother was from an Irish background.
My Grandmothers parents were John and Matilda Day formerly Rogers they lived at 1 Court 2 Vere Steet, I don't think they were Catholics.
My Grand parents when they were married both lived in Ashley Street which I cannot find on any map but I think it was in the Sherlock Street area and was destroyed in 1940 in an air raid.
My Grandparents then lived in 4 back 42 Vere Street, this the House I remember visiting when I was a Child.

Any help out there.

1891 census lookup please

James Scott
Living at 109 Coventry Street, Deritend in 1891
I could do with his birth date and birth place please

Day,s

Hi KJSS, heres a "probable" for you except Matilda saying "Ann"

1901 census RG13 piece 2863 Folio 116 page 40
John Day age 32 Police Constable born B,ham
Wife "Ann" age 32 , Daughter Catherine age 9,
Other children, James 6, winifred 3, Edith 1

A probable but needs cross-referencing 1st,
cheers John Y:cool:

Day-Rogers

Hi KJSS, a possible marriage Day & Rogers combination 1891
The year prior to Catherines birth,, usual ;)

Sometimes the Guys told porkie pies too
Your "John" day may have preferred John to being a William,,,
so rest of Family may have put him as John on their Marriage cert?

William Day married Matilda Rogers in Plymouth 1891
Oct/Nov/Dec Quarter, Plymouth volume 5b page 559

possible/probable,, Logistically, Year + Rogers & Day combination
a probable mathematical match,, The Matilda correct, just the "John" ?
Best regards John Y

John Scott

Hi KJSS I have found Ashley Street in my old Wakelin's Street Guide, you had the right area, it actually ran from 138 Bristol Street to Gooch Street, Birmingham.5.

There is one death between 1892 and 1901 of John Scott

John Scott aged 37 March quarter 1898 Birmingham ref 6D 65

I've searched for a marriage for John Scott and Mary Donoghue and can't find one. I wonder as you thought that Mary was possibly Irish, if they may have married in Ireland.

Mary Scott

To John Young,

You mentioned a Mary Scott living in Blucher street when the 1901 census was taken.
Her father was John Day, there is a record of a John Day living at 69 Blucher Street at the time of the 1881 census.
Do you know what address Mary Scott was living in Blucher Street in 1901.
If here husband John Scott had died in 1897 as one record suggests she may have moved back home.

Scott,s

Hi again KJSS

1901 census you require is, RG13 piece 2833 Folio 143 page 11
5 court-House number 10 (this is courtyard next to 67/68/69 Blucher St)
Mary Scott age 40, Head (of house) Widow, charwoman born B,ham
James Scott, son age 9, Jemmima Hughes age 72, Widow, born
Gt Bourton ?, Staffs (Probable Mary,s mother/In-law, relative someway?), also in same house is
Elizabeth Hughes age 48, Spinster, Charwoman, born B,ham,
Hoping this further assists your searches,
Cheers John Y

Can you Look up John Scott of 109 Coventry Street in the 1891 census please.

Thanks

I have searched the 1891 census and can't find John Scott, I also looked for Mary Donaghue in case they married after the census was taken but couldn't find her either.

Hello Di.Poppit,

I seem to be hitting a brick wall with John Scott. I have my Grandfathers birth certificate James Scott which states he was born at 109 Covenrty Street on the 20th of January 1892, his father was John Scott and mother Mary Scott formerly Donoghue.
The birth certificate is a copy produced in 1924 , could there be mistakes on the forenames or address.
I have assumed that they were living at 109 Coventry Street at the time of 1891 census.

Any Ideas

Thanks
KJS
