sarehole Road, Walton Family

Hello All,

My Great Grandmother's sister, Lilian Maud Powell (b1886) married John (Jack) Walton in Aston (Warwickshire) 1913. They had one son John A Walton b. 1916 Aston

I have been told by an elderly relative that they lived at and ran a shop (possibly a wool shop?) on Sarehole Road, Birmngham during the 1930s-40s- can anyone confirm this?

Many thanks

Elly x

Hi there, from Electoral Roll,in 1920 and 1925 John and Lilian Maud were at 15 Roderick Rd,Sparkhill.
In 1930 John and Lilian were at 421 Shirley Rd.
In 1939 and 1945 John and Lilian Maud were at 267 Sarehole Rd.Son John Arthur was mentioned at that address in 1939.

Linda- you are a star! Many thanks x

I'll try posting this address on the Kelly's thread to see if anyone knows if it's listed as a shop.

Hi elly
Looking at the directories, john walton is listed at 267 Sarehole Road as a private address in 1939 and 1940. It is another name listed at that address in 1938. There is no mention of a john (or Lilian) walton in the commercial listings as running a shop , though they could be running a shop elsewhere . In 1943 and 1944 there is a john walton, shopkeeper at 84A Upper thomas St, and john walton still at 267 as a private address.
In 1949 john Walton is not listed at a private address in Kellys. The John walton is still shopkeeper at upper thomas St, but I think that’s probably someone else of the same name (possibly the son mentioned by ladylinda.?) I did wonder if they ran a shop in the Sarehole road at a different address to their house under a name other than Walton (“The wool Shop “ etc), but there aren’t all that many shops in the road, and theya ll seem to be under a specific name (or be something like a garage, which isn’t what you are looking for)

PS have corrected year from 1948 to 1949. Sorry for error

Wonderful! many thanks for your help Mike-

although I'm still trying to find a scrap of truth in the story- Is there anyway of knowing what sort of shop the John Walton at Upper Thomas St ran?

Elly

I was at Burlington Street School, Aston, and we had a girl Barbara Walton who lived at a general shop/sweets etc., in Upper Thomas Street, this would be 1950/51, so probably she was the daughter of John Walton. Sorry I have no further information.

I had assumed that the shop in upper thomas St was a different John Walton, but as you do consider it a possibility I have gone on slightly.
First I have corrected the year that he was not listed in Sarehole road from 1948 to 1949 on the original post . sorry about the error. John was still at Upper thomas St in 1950 and 1956 , but had gone from the directory , together with no 84A, in 1962 . Possibly the shop was merged with no 84 ( a fried fish shop) to make a bigger shop. It doesn’t mean anything, but in 1940, before a John Walton took over the shop, it was a cooked meats shop.

Sorry, haven't been on for a while and didn't realise there were more replies! Mike- thankyou for looking into that further for me. Not sure I'll ever know- but have added the info to my notes. Sylvia, also added your info to the notes- can't see immediate connection to Barbara, but will look into it. Thankyou both for taking the time to reply, your help is much appreciated.
