I have found a Sarah Ann WARD, born 2nd Jan 1865, to my Great-Grandmother, Sarah Elizabeth WARD, nee Harrison (born Tipton 1835).
Sarah Ann is shown as born at the workhouse, Dudley Road, Birmingham.
Interestingly, no father is shown on the birth certificate.
Sarah Elizabeth is the wife of my Great-Grandfather William Henry WARD (born Masbrough, Rotherham 1838).
Is anyone else doing this family line.

Hi Wardster and welcome to a great site.
Just a thought as to why there no father's name on birth cert'...
I have an aunt born Birkenhead Workhouse infirmary also with no father's name on her birth cert'.
The reason for this being, that My Grandad died a month before she was born. The family had still been living in London (where my Mom was born a couple of years earlier) at the time of his death.
The family after his death because of 'Poor Law' regulations and having no means of support were moved to the area of my Grandads birth (Birkenhead), then because Gran had no proof that the baby was Granddads, the father's name was left blank.

Could William have died before the baby was born?

Hi Pomgolian.
William was not dead and proves to be mysterious.
He was on 1851 Census age 13 at Victoria Street, Rotherham

He was on 1861 Census age 23 at Oil Mill Fold, Rotherham but as a lodger with his wife Hannah (Wigley)

He was on the 1871 Census age 32 at 9 New Zealand, Rotherham with his wife Sarah Elizabeth (Harrison) and Sarah Ann shown as their daughter aged 6

He was on the 1881 Census age 45 at 17 Wortley Road, Rotherham with his wife Sarah Elizabeth but no Sarah Ann

He was on the 1891 Census at 25 Midland Road, Rotherham

He died 18th February 1895 at College Road, Rotherham with Alice Elizabeth Pailing listed as being present

I did find William's son Edward (Grandad) on the 1901 Census at 20 Gaston Terrace, Hemsworth with a visitor called Lily Pailing aged 8

Regards
Wardster
