It depended on the practice of the individual clergyman before 1837 so whether parents names were recorded varied from parish to parish. Were you referring to records at Edgbaston in particular, Mike?
If they were using the standard 1753 Hardwicke Act register there is no place to record the parents. In my family research I have not found an entry between 1753 and 1837 with the parents recorded
