Hello, I would appreciate any help regarding the war records WW1 of my grandfather Samuel edward Green who served in the RH & RFA Reg 84000 as a gunner. Unit D 31st battalion. He came through the war and rejoined the Royal Engineers no.2213626 in November 1925. I am at a loss to know where to look for any information. Was the RH&RFA the Warwickshire's? Thanks in advance.

hello janette, the only thing i can help you with is his medal card. sorry if you already have this. hope someone else can help with other records.

it was royal field artillery

Janette you may have more luck if you re post your information on the WW1 thread.:)

Hello, I only have a few papers so will tell you whats on them.

I understood he was a Gunner with regiment No 84,000 Unit: D31 battl Reg or Corps RFA
this is on a form marked Soldier not remaining with the colours. The form is dated 13 April 1919.

On another form headed Demobilisation crossed out, he enlisted 20 August 1914 to RH & RFA. This form says he was transferred to Army Reserve 11 May 1919.

The last form I have is headed No 2213626 Rank Sapper being discharged from Royal Engineers on 25 November 1929 having enlisted Birminngham 26 November 1925 having served four years in the Supplementary Reserve.

I am very muddled up and am trying to sort out where he served in the war as my mother tells me France and the Somme although she is in her 80's and forgetfull.

I have a photo of him dressed in hs military uniform if that would help?
Thanks for your help.:)

As you say, he enlisted, on 20 August, 1914. His Medal Index Card gives the date 20 May, 1915, Theatre of War, France.
That date is the day he left the UK to be posted to serve as a 'Gunner' in a Battery of a Field Artillery Brigade.
Thus between 20/8/14 to 20/5/15, he was in the UK training.
His demob form gives you the number of the Artillery Brigade he was serving in and the Battery i.e. 31 Brigade, D Battery.
However, that may not be the unit he first joined when he got posted in 1915.

the 31 Brigade RFA (in army parlance XXX1 Brigade) served in the British Regular Army 28th Division, and during the Great War saw service in France and Salonika (Greece).
