Russian map of 1970s

The university of southampton has aquired some cold war russian maps ( https://www.southampton.ac.uk/cartography/sovietmaps/info.html ) . Out of interest i have just got the (half of) Birmingham one. Only the east half of Birmingham was obtained by the university. The maps are a trifle mysterious, with cyrrillic writing,rather unwealdly, but pretty detailed for the scale used. In case anyone is interested I have just about managed to scan the centre of Brum and , because of the size (4mb), put it on a link at

Have just noticed that the survey was probably doner a little earlier than 1970 as Curzon St station buildings are shown which were demolished , i think, slightly before 1970.

Thanks for sharing, Mike. How fascinating to see what the Russians extrapolated as being of importance and how creepy to know that they were evaluating Birmingham. This all brings to mind "War of the Worlds" when the inhabitants of Earth were going about their everyday business unaware of how they were being watched from Mars....
