Can anyone help in locating Russell St. (Not great Russell St), it appears on a census return in 1851 in St Mary's Ward. It is noted also on the 1841 census but no ward listed.
I found this photo on a site which labels it as Russell Street, it's from the 1980s and since demolished. (Don't know if it's correctly labelled. Could it actually be Great Russell Street? And don't know if Russell Street was still in existence in the 1980s? Maybe someone can confirm). Viv.
yes viv caption wrong on that one...as we know phyllis died in 1969...i keep thinking what if i could be transported back just for a little with a modern day camera and take all the photos we now search for lol..
Absolutely Lyn. Mind you it wasn't so easy to take pictures. In modern times where (almost) everyone carries a mobile phone we can snap any threatened building in a second. So you have to admire photographers like Phyllis who would have gone out purposely to get the best shots possible before these views changed dramatically or disappeared altogether. Also, I expect there would have been quite a few duds where images didn't develop too well. One of the real benefits of the way technology has moved on. Viv.
Actually have just checked the e-papers where the photo is listed at https://epapers.bham.ac.uk/447/ and this lsits it as Great Russell /st. So obviously som eone has not transcribed the tiel correctly
