Robinson Family of Aston Information required

James R

proper brummie kid
I was looking for information on the Robinson Family of Sutherland St Aston, it's a request about about parentage,It would appear that I was brought up by the Robinson family and was given their surname I know that they were given a few shillings per week to look after me,I cant say that it was a very happy childhood but I managed to leave at the age of 17 and never looked back, but I will ever be thankfull for the friends and adventures of that childhood and remember fondly Aston who taught me how to survive.Aye Thanks

Re: Information required

Cheers Sue,I have no dates to go on except I was a child of the 30's I have tried searching the Family sites but of no avail It would appear that all contact was lost upon joining the Royal Marines in 1947,I did have someone contact me claiming to be a half brother and he also claimed he worked fo M15 which I took with a pinch of salt?. I know its a odd sort of request but it set me thinking who the Hell! ditched me was I found under a goosberry bush, cardboard box on Snow Hill station,it would seem I spent most of my time going back and forth I do find it rather amusing at my time of life.Aye JR

Re: Information required

Hi John
Since I started my family history I have found that many of the family "stories" my parents and aunts and uncles talked about have in the main proved to be true but the details were a bit blurred or not entirely correct and as a result I have had a few wild goose chases.

I also have two ancestral families in Aston who "fostered" children around the 1925 / 30s, one kept the childrens original family name and the other changed the childrens name to their own and although I have been able to trace the foster childrens parents, I can find no connection to my family by blood ties at all so the reason they took them in to foster them eludes me. Just like in your case there are so many answers to the same question.

What I am trying to say is that the information you were given as a child about the reason you were placed with the Robinsons, especially in those times may just be what they thought you needed to know and you may not have been told the whole truth as it may have been too grown up for a childs ears or you may have talked outside the family if it was a secret. Also if an unmarried relative gave birth to you the family would have wanted to keep secrets in those days because of the neighbours so they could have said they fostered you and no one would be the wiser. This happened to one of my aunts, my granny bought up the child as her own.

There are a couple of John Robinson births registered in 1930 with the mothers name Robinson so it may be possible the mother was unmarried.

Ref: Birmingham North 1930 December Qtr Vol 6d page 547

Maybe you should research the Robinson Family Tree and see if you can match up any family details to what you were told, were any of the other children older than you, if so they may know more than you think.

The 1930's were also bad times with no work or money around and the workhouse / National Assistance would loom in a families life. There are endless possibilities to your question of origin and I hope you find the answers you want.

Have you looked at this site specifically about Aston you may find some old contacts there
