From Kellys Birmingham Directory 1895, 1897 & 1900 I have a listing of Robert Harvey Teal, bird dealer, 26 Moseley Street.

Then Kellys Birmingham Directory 1908, 1912, 1913, 1915,& 1921 shows a listing of Robert Harvey Teal & Lucy Teal, shopkeeper, painter 19 Highgate Street.

I am trying to establish if this is one Robert Harvey Teal going from one shop to another.

Unfortunately I have no access to Kellys Directories of Birmingham.

The above dates I have found on-line but cannot find any others.

I was wondering if anyone might lookup the year 1905 to see if the two shop addresses are listed and if Robert H Teal is listed as occupier.

Paul

1903
Teal Robert Harvey, bird dealer, 26 Moseley street
Humphage Wm.shopkeep 19 highgate St

1904
26 moseley st not listed,
Robert Harvey Teal not listed
Humphage Wm.shopkeep 19 highgate St

1905
Teal Robert H house painter 22 Charles Henry St.(No 22 not listed in 1904)
26 moseley st not listed,
Humphage Wm.shopkeep 19 highgate St

1908
22 Charles Henry St not listed
This shows Robert Harvey Teall , painter at 19 highgate St, but no Lucy.
1912
Both Robert Harvey and Lucy are listed at no 19.

Incidently the 1920 electoral roll shows Robert Harvey, Lucy and Harvey Percival Teall at 19 Highgate St, together with Walter Cresswell. The 1912 roll only lists Robert Harvey , as women didn’t have the vote.

This would indicate that it was the same person, but the 1901 census confirms it:

At 26 Moseley St
Robert H Teall 46 Painter & paperhanger born Worcs
Lucy Teall 34 Bird shopkeeper born Gt Rossington (?) gloucs.
Lily L. Teall 14 tin solderer b. Birmingham
Thomas F.Teall 12 b. Birmingham
Susan Teall 10 b. Birmingham
Dorothy J. Teall 3 b. Birmingham
Harvey E.Teall 1 b. Birmingham
Charlotte P. Teall 2 months b. Birmingham

So it looks as if Lucy ran the bird business, at least in 1901, while Robert did his house painting

Many thanks Mike, I really do appreciate that info.

It is amazing the things that turn up just nosing around directoties etc.

Thanks again Mike, much appreciated.

Paul.

Interestingly,Robert H Teall is in the 1901 census as a Painter and paper hanger and wife Lucy is a bird and dog shopkeeper, living at 26 Moseley Street, together with children Lilly (14),Thomas (12),Susan (10),Dorothy (3)Harvey (1) and Charlotte (2 months).
By 1911 they have moved to 19 Highgate Street and have more children. They had 7 children altogether,5 still living and 2 died.
With Robert (57) and Lucy (44) at Highgate St were;
Dorothy (13),Harvey (11),Charlotte (10),Alice (7) and Leslie (5).
They had been married 14 years.

I was wondering if Lucy was into birds before her marriage, but in 1891 she was a cook for Emily Buckley ( 59 , living on own means) at 97 Gough Road. She doesn’t appear as Lucy Pratley on the 1871 or 1881 censuses. On these censuses there are only two lucys born within ± 2 tears of her declared birth in great Rissington,. On is named Agg and is later listed as married on a family tree. The other is Smith, daughter of a wheelwright, and she is listed as a scholar in 1881.

Thanks LadyLinda,

Reckon two of these:

William J
Henry C
Lily
Thomas F
Susan.

Will do a bit of checking for an hour tonite then back on it tomorrow!

Thanks again both.

I was wondering if the 2 children who died were the children of Lucy and Robert,as they have 5 children under 14 (they had been married 14 years)with them in 1911,and would probably have answered the census as pertaining to Lucy, not to Robert's first wife?
Muddied the waters haven't I!!!!

:D Ladylinda,

.........that makes good sense. I think your right. Will check Rob & Lucy's children and see what turns up. No joy on the ones I thought. Looking at it logically (as you have) It makes sense.

Thanks LadyLinda.

Bordesley_Exile,
Thanks for Pratley link, very usefull.

Ellen Emmett Teall
AGE 4
Born 1901
Died 1905

Winifred Lucy Teall
AGE 0
Born 1903
Died 1903

Sadly, these two look promising. Right time, area and middle names are a bit to much of a coincedence I think. I will order certificates now to try to confirm.

I always find this part of geneaology hard:( With a three year old of my own I often wonder how hard it was back in those days and how sad and grief stricken my relatives must of been when someone died so young.

Well done for finding them.
Looking back to some of the living conditions and access to healthcare etc in the early 20th century,it's a wonder so many of our ancestors survived.

Received certificates today, unfortunately Ellen was not daughter of Rob and Lucy but Winifred was so one out of two so far!

CONFIRMED PARENTAGE
Winifred Lucy Teall
AGE 0
Born 1903
Died 1903

I have found three other possibilities for second child who died:

Samuel John Teall
BORN: 1902
YEAR OF REGISTRATION: 1902
QTR: JUL-AUG-SEP
Age at death: 0
DISTRICT: Aston
COUNTY: Warwickshire
VOL: 6d
PAGE: 215

Stanley Louis Teall
BORN: 1910
YEAR OF REGISTRATION: 1910
QTR: JAN-FEB-MAR
Age at death: 0
DISTRICT: Aston
COUNTY: Warwickshire
VOL: 6d
PAGE: 148

Frederick William Teall
BORN: 1903
QTR: JUL-AUG-SEP
YEAR OF REGISTRATION:1903
Age at death: 0
DISTRICT: Aston
COUNTY: Warwickshire
VOL: 6d
PAGE: 220

Rather than ordering three birth certificates to proove who (if any of these) were born to Robert and Lucy is there any way of finding name of both or one parent and then ordering that certificate?

Thanks

Paul.

When you send for the cert giving the details, also add the parents names asking them to cross check it, they wont send it if these don't match, send for it from Birmingham, they are very helpful.
