Looking for my great grandad John Robbins, who married Pamela Crew in Birmingham 18th Feb 1850 at St Martins. He was a pocketbook maker (whatever that was) and lived at 108 Bell Barn Road in the St. Thomas district. It shows somewhere he had a son, John,(think 1861 census for B.ham where it seems to show John the son as aged 27 but that cant be right!! but they had 2 lodgers and they were 27 too) but then John snr. moved to Sheffield. Broomspring Lane, and had a daughter, Annie, born in Warwickshire, son William, born in Belfast, and son Harry born in Sheffield, Ecclesall Bierlow. Would love to traceJohn Robbins birth details, born in Birmingham Warwickshire in 183l . On the 1881 census, his son, John isnt there and then on the 1891 census his son William isnt there either. dont know how to look any further for them. Can anyone help. Would love to see pics of St. Martins Church, 108 Bell Barn Road or any information about John's parents, birth details of Annie, born in 1867. Sorry.... so many questions :idiot2: please advise. ::)

I think this might be your family, but Pamela has bee transcribed as Ann. 1851 Census

Name Relationship Mar Age Sex Occupation Birthplace
John ROBINS Head M 20 M Pocket Book M Birmingham-WAR
Ann ROBINS Wife M 28 F Pocket Book M Birmingham----
George ROBINS Son - 2 M --- Birmingham-WAR
Address: 1 Ho 10 Ct Allison St, Birmingham
Census Place: Birmingham Birmingham, Warwickshire
PRO Reference: HO/107/2053 Folio: 640 Page: 26 FHL Film: 0087312

Thank you both so much for the info.... which I am still getting my head around.
Di.... already Pamela Ann has been transcribed as Ann or even Francia Ann (which was poor handwriting and was actually Pamela)

Wow! who is George then?? looks like I have to look further now for George, John and William... who no.one has ever heard of... although George is a family name.

Is there a possibility they got her age wrong... cos all along from 1861 she is two years younger than her husband John?

Any suggestions as to where to go from here?

Ta very much :smitten:

The ages on census records are notorious for being tongue in cheek. Most of our ancestors couldn't remember when they were born, and took a guess, and the original records have been mistranscribed, often because they are difficult to read. So Johns wife's age of 28 could of course be 18. I think your next move ought to be to get the birth certificate for George, which should be in the March quarter for 1851.

If you give me John's fathers name, from his marriage certificate, I can look for him on the 1851.

Just to put a bit of flesh on the bones, a Pocketbook maker would have worked in leather, Americans still call a hand bag a pocket book. The main industry for the Midlands was in Walsall, so it would be interesting to know where the work was being done in Birnmingham. I'm sure some one on the Forum will know. :)
There may be an entry in a Kelly's. Not sure if the Forum Kelly's are early enough..

Your information is so much appreciated.. thank you.
Being very green at the ancestry tracing I have never sent for a wedding/birth certificate before...
and as I only found out my g.grandad's wedding date very recently from free B.M.D. via a trial on Ancestry.com I havent done anything about it... as it is the first piece of concrete information I have I realise I must send off for it to find out g.g.grandad's name (although I suspect it may be John too) and his occupation and ... address/birthplace???
sorry to be so clueless... but how do I send off for certs.?

cheers Robbin :-[

OOOps sorry.... meant to ask this..
Did it say George Robbins son aged 2years M for male or George aged 2months?

I read elsewhere on the most interesting Birmingham Forum that girls usually got married at their birthplace or returned home to be with their mother to have their first child and they were christened from there... but I guess Pamela Ann Crew was different and didnt go to London Mddx. She seems to have only been 17 when married and John 19 but I guess things were different then.
Looked for St Martins.... but does it mean St. Martins Church, or St. Martins district. You gave their (probably) first married address as Allison Street.... they were at Bell Barn Road by 186l with a son John but no mention of George. :)

Hi

To order a marriage certificate, go to Fre BMD and follow the instructions there, it will take you to a page where you can download a form. It may also let you order on line, I can't remember. What you do need is the reference for the marriage. I looked this up in case you hadn't made a note of it. It is March quarter 1850 Ref 16 335 Birmingham. Pamela by the way is shown as Pamela Ann.

Now we seem to have hit a snag, Pamela or Ann says she is born in BIrmingham on the 1851, on the 1881 she says Mddx. It could be a transcription error or an assumption by the original enumerator. I do feel it is your family, but proceed with caution!!

Also another hiccup is the age of George, I think  he was probably the George Ralph I turned up on the BMD index who was registered June quarter 1851 - sometimes the birth wasn't registered in the quarter when the child was born. BUT the census I put on here for you I downloaded from my disc of the 1851, and I have checked and it does read 2 years. There is no registration of a George who could be 2 years old in 1851. So you ought to apply for George Ralphs certificate, there I hit another prob. the ref isn't clear I think it reads XV1 341 June quarter 1851 Birmingham, it's the 341 that is badly written He is not on Free BMD by the way, I used 1837online, If he is the son of John and Pamela Ann then you would know the census family is yours. I suppose you could put a note in if you apply by post, telling them the register is not clear.

Hope this all make sense to you. :)

Hello there Cromwell

My William Robbins was aged 10 in the 1881 census in Sheffield and shown as scholar .. born in Belfast.
Then I lost him in the 1891 and 1901 census.... he may have married and moved from the area... he may have died..... he may have been a soldier... as many of dad's family seem to have joined up aged 17 ish to give them a job and get them away from home. Also ... he may have chosen another name for himself.... I have an Uncle Frank..... unaccounted for.... so he may have been William..or John or George.... who I have also lost track of after 185l, and 186l respectively.... Aint life hard when you dont have any other living relatives of a higher generation??? still waiting for birth certs to see if they give me any more clues.
Thanks for getting in touch... if I find out anything else about my Robbins's - Birmingham or otherwise I'll be in touch.
Cheers. :-\

Hi Robbinabobbin, Dont know if this is any help there was a Crew family living in the Bell Barn area early 1900,s there was a daughter named margaret [Maggie] she married Jack Hall they had several daughters one named Pamala they moved to the Tyseley area in the 40,s Robert

Once again I am indebted to the Birmingham Forum Folk for such interesting ideas. When... these certificates arrive I will perhaps be in a better position to look at Pamela's folks. By the way... where is
Tyseley?? My Pamela born in 1833 in London Middx. But Pamela IS a family name. How exciting!!
Cheers. be in touch.

marriage cert for John and Pamela arrived... v. interesting. Di put me on to 1851 census showing J and P and son George living on Allinson St. Noticed a Sampson Rabins living next door (birthplace Summersett) and I wondered if his accent made Robins sound like Rabins.... sure enough Johns father was called Sampson Robbins.
So in 185l he is listed as Head aged 63 a .............? washer or worker
(on the marriage cert his occ. is a refiner??)
Charlotte wife 52
Elizabeth?? dau 25 Joseph son 13 Sarah Dau 10 Harry (family name again) son 8 and James? son either 2 or 5
any further updates on these please would be much appreciated. Havent got cert for George Ralph as yet. :crazy2:

Hi Robbin, well done.

In case you don't already have it, this seems to be Sampson's marriage to Charlotte

Wow! another name for me..... Charlotte THOMAS ..... where do I view that and order their wedd. cert please?

Wedding or birth certificates didn't begin until 1837. There are only the parish records. The family Search where the info is from is available free on line, or you may be able to see the parish records at a local office perhaps in Brum somewhere? One of my Aunties was married to a Robbins. Alfred was his name, and they are both buried in Aston churchyard. They lived in Nechells too, and I believe he was a publican. As a kid I remember seeing a door with his name on the actual window somewhere in Nechells. It was 60 years ago now, so I my mind may be playing tricks. Good luck in your search though
Lynda

Hi Robin. as Linda says, no more certificates will be available on that branch of the Robbins family. It aint quite so easy from that point.

Aston Juxta Birmingham church is the parish church in Aston - St Peter and Pauls. You need to look at the actual record to verify what is on Family Search Org. I can't remember what Aston's records show. Occasionally you get a bit more info, but not too often.

Good luck :)
