Ridley Family Chain Walk

MadMomma

Wannabe Brummie Again
Hi Forumites

Does anyone no anything at all about the Ridley family who lived in Chain Walk in the 1914 onwards probably until 1942 when the area was bombed. Not sure about the dates though

Father was Charles Henry Ridley born 1868 Aston died 1937
Mother was Florence Ada Bonner born 1870 Palmer St Aston died 1941

They married December 1887 St George's Birmingham

Children

Lillian Ridley born November 1888 married John Alfred Newton in 1910 their 7 children included Sonny
Florence Clara Ridley born 1892 Aston died 1985 married William Lamb in 1915 - four children. Known as Dolly or to me Aunt Doll she was apparently a bit of a stunner in her youth!
Charles Ridley born 1895 Aston married Evelyn Lea in 1917 - 2 daughters
Arthur William Ridley born 1897 Aston married an Alice - three children
Annie Ridley born August 1899 married Charles Hulls September 1923 St Paul's Lozells. - 3 children. Known as Nance or Nancie - my grandmother!
Leonard Ridley born 1900 in Cowper Street married Julia Ham (?) in 1926 - 2 children
Amy Ridley born 1903 died Sep 1914 at Chain Walk after she fell into a fire in the house.

Charles was the brother of Arthur John Ridley born 1873 married to Annie Chambers. He was a Commission Agent who hurriedly emigrated to the USA after ousing his wife down the cellar steps on Boxing Day. They had one child born 1900 also in Cowper Street he was also Arthur who was a bookmaker and also worked at the Woolsey.

Arthur Snr entered US in 1909 and he is shown living in Manhattan in 1910 and 1920.

So if anyone knows anything about the family I would be grateful if you would let me know. I'd take the cellar steps with a pinch of salt as the tale came from my mother (of the legendary swastika shaped German Measles).

Regards
Avril

Leonard Ridley married Emma Ham in 1926.

1901 ,53 Paddington street,Birmingham
Arthur ridley age 28 b. Birmingham, living on own means
Annie age 28
Arthur age 9 months.

If Arthur entered USA in 1909,I think he must have left Annie behind as I have been unable to find a death for her before 1st qtr 1910.
It might be worth checking the 1911 for Annie and the young Arthur.

Thanks Alberta - he did indeed leave Annie and Arthur Junior behind - what a rotter!

Regards
Avril
