Richard Samuel Cooper in Coventry Road

I have recently been goven info about a relative Richard samuel Cooper who was living at 152 or 752 Coventry Road in 1901. He was most likely working from home as a pawnbroker with his wife Alice and children George and Kate.

I am trying to find more info about this gentleman and where he lived so I can move forward to today.

I have been stalking these forums and found heaps of references and pics of Coventry Road. It appears like it was avery long road.

I am trying to pinpoint the area.

I have also found reference to Coventry. Is this a different area or does it refer to the road area.

I hope I am not offending local people, but this Aussie girl does not know the area.

The Coventry Road is indeed a long road that runs from Bordesley in Birmingham to Coventry. It is the A45. The part that you are interested in is in Small Heath which is adjacent to Bordesley. If its number 152, it's probably close to the junction with Muntz Street. If 752 most likely near to the Coventry Road junction with St Benedicts Road. Colloquially the Coventry Road is "The Cov". PMC147 has recently posted some wonderful photographs of the Coventry Road in Small Heath from about the 1950's. You will find them under: Re: Shops Muntz st/The Cov
 
Further to beamish - Yes Coventry is a City in its own right being granted its City Charter between 1161 and 1175 whereas Birmingham was granted city status in 1889 by Queen Victoria.

Note: What Brummies know as the ''Coventry Road is the 'Birmingham Road' by the time it reaches Coventry and is said by many to be Coventry's finest attribute.

This may elp (or not) in the 1901 directory under the heding Pawnbroker there is a
Cooper Mrs Alice Francis 14 Barn St
 
Richard Samuel Cooper died age 63 years.
His Death was registered in the-
March Quarter 1908 in Birmingham
Ref : N0: -6d-162
His death certifcate would give you information of where family were living.

Richard & Family were at 752 Coventry Rd in 1901.

Unsure if you have this Marriage.

Richard Samuel Cooper = Alice Lewis
Registered in
March Q 1869 in Kings Norton .
Ref N0: 6c-517

At that time Kings Norton was in Worcestershire , it is now part of Birmingham.

Note- Alice did not use name Frances at time of Marriage

Bojalu, I did not have the info you gave about the 1920-1935 address. This is very much appreciated. I can only assume the daughter may have married or has moved away from home.

The Alice Lewis you refer to I think is his first wife. This Alice he married in 1877, she was an Alice Pomfret. On his marriage certificate he was listed as a widower.

He obviously had a thing for girls named Alice

I have received further info since your last posting to me about George Edward Cooper between 1920 and 1935. I am not sure of the source of you info, but I am wondering if there is any reference to a Gertrude Frances Cooper.

George married her in Dec of 1909 and I am unable to find out anything about her after this date.

i see you are looking at coopers family may i suggest you look down speedwell rd hay mills there was a george cooper family and as i am aware there is the coopers family been living there for donkey years next to the tim kirby yard and the european metals importers whom have lived there for donkey years as i have just said speedwell rd is the bottom end of the coventry rd behind it in fact
its by the old red hill school which is red hill rd and the the top of that rd brings you in line with the coopers house facing
in fact my daughter as a friend whom i beleive as a sister whom is married to a sibbling of this cooper family i will try and make contact with my daughter and asked dawn her freind to asked her sister to enquire with in that family but you can check records your self i also noticed that you are intrested in the stevens family
have you any names to go bye with in the stevens family as i know a stevens as well
