RICHARD DICKINS - BORN BIRMINGHAM 1810

Hi

I have been looking for any sign of my 3x great grandfather, Richard Dickins, in the Birmingham records for many years now, but with no luck. On the census records he consistently said that the was born in 1810 in Birmingham. I can find a record for a Richard Dickins who was christened in Birmingham, son of Fowler and Catherine, who I believe may be my Richard's cousin. The son of Fowler and Catherine emigrated to the USA with his family, so I know this is not my Richard. In his 20's Richard had a business as a tailor in Wolverhampton, lived in Albrighton with his wife and family, before moving to Kings Norton upon the death of his wife, which is where he died in 1890. I have now reached a dead end where my Dickins research in concerned, unless I can find some clue as to Richard's parentage, so any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Hi Lyn

Yes, that is my Richard. He dissolved the tailor's business, and became registrar of births and deaths in Albrighton.

His marriage record to Anne Bucknall is on findmypast, could have his father's name on it.

And though he emigrated he could have come back.

Hi

I have several records for his marriage to Anne, but it is just before certification, and there is no mention of his father on the banns etc. I am in touch with a lovely gentleman with the Albrighton FHS, who has checked the parish records on my behalf, and there is no mention of Richard's father.

The Richard Dickins that moved to the USA can be traced on US census records, and he stayed there until his death is Salem, Wayne County. Unfortunately , Richard is a family name that is repeatedly used within each generation, which complicates matters for me somewhat.

Any ideas on where to look next would be gratefully received, as I have exhausted all current records on Ancestry, find my past, and family search sites.

Many thanks

That's a shame. Any clues from the witnesses?

I did notice a Henry Fowler Dickens, son of John and Ann, who was baptised in Bham but seems to have been in Colchester. Maybe it happened in reverse for Richard born Bham but baptised elsewhere, though that's not too helpful.

Henry Fowler Dickins was in partnership with my Richard Dickins, and Richard's children were given the same names as John and Ann Dickins' children. John and Ann's daughter was also a witness at Richard's marriage. I therefore assume there is a family connection, but I have not been able to find out what. John Dickins was in the army, and this is why the Colchester connection is there.

I am in touch with a lovely lady who is descended from John and Ann Dickins, and I am a dna match to her mother, so I know there is a connection to this branch of the Dickins family. Unfortunately she has been researching the Dickins family for decades, and is having just as much trouble as I am trying all the clues together.

What was the name of the daughter? Could it be then that Henry Fowler and your Richard were brothers and with John being a soldier, Richard was baptised somewhere else, as I mentioned above, and the records for that place are not available yet.

Are there any military records for John Dickens, listing his postings perhaps?

Not too sure how dna testing works but can you tell your relationship to each other from them? Second cousins, third cousins or more distant?

Hi

I did think that my Richard and Henry Fowler could be brothers, and I certainly think they are closely related. I am in touch with a direct descendant of John Dickins (Henry Fowler's father) whose mother is a dna match to myself, and John Dickins was her great grandfather. I therefore am sure that I am related to John Dickins the soldier, but am unable to find any records to prove this. This same lady, who is extremely helpful, has been researching the Dickins family for a very long time, including John's military records, but has unfortunately not found anything either as yet!

I will just have to keep digging! Thank you for your suggestions :)
