Red Rum in Stirchley

Laurence

I was there but can't remember when and I can't trace any photos I took. It was in the 1980s when the Three Horseshoes, Pershore Road, Stirchley was closed for a refurb. It was re-opened by a celebrity and I am 99% certain it was Red Rum (or possibly another recently retired racehorse). I can remember him being led through the pub - fortunately he was well behaved and did not make a mess on the new carpets. After all that, my question is, can anyone supply a date when it happened, please?

Lawrence,

I assume it was after 1950. I can't see anything on the online British Library Newspaper Archive for that period, but not all Birmingham newspapers have been digitsed beyond 1945.

Lawrence,

Red Rum was retired in 1977 and that was when he started opening supermarkets, etc, and as Lyn says, died in 1995. As I mentioned above, Birmingham Mail coverage is so far only up to 1945 and the Birmingham Daily Post up to 1979. Plenty of modern and a few old picture of the exterior can be found via Google, but no site mentions both the pub and Red Rum. You could try the Stirchley Website here - http://www.stirchley.co.uk/History_12.html - there have a Contact Us button.
