Red Lion/Trader Acocks Green

Formerly known as 'The Trader' back in the 80s.
This pub has had a reputation for bad behaviour in more recent years,but nevertheless I spent many happy times there years back.Last week I recognised many old faces who used to drink in the Acocks/Tysley area from my time there 20+ years ago.
A friend was the relief manager back in '88,and after being around with him can genuinely say it was tough work being the gaffer there.

There was an old building,it was demolished back I think in the 70s,a new pub was built,and a supermarket built in the car park.

The building that stood where the Red Lion stands today was strangely enough the Red Lion a pub that I believe Astonian managed at one time. It was demolished so the land at the back along with some land belonging to the church & school could be used to build a supermarket.

The pub built on the front was a much smaller place and at first also called the Red lion it it remained known by this name for quite a while until they renamed it the Trader. I am quite surprised to hear it has reverted to the Red Lion.

Nice old pic Phil,M&B were quite ruthless in destroying some great buildings if they smelt a few bob.

I much prefer the old pub, what a shame they knocked it down.

I drove through Acocks Green today, I noticed that this pub was boarded up. Anyone know the reason why?

any body got any photos of the mitre corner of railway terrace / long acre there is a modern photo on this site but i am looking for an older picture as i remember it when i was a kid, 50s ish

Wessex, pre 1950 my dad was a crown green bowla team captan for the Gospel Oak and I remember me and two brothers with mom and dad going to all the local pubs that had greens. At the Red Lion we used to sit on the benches near ta green and watch dad play. Happy days.

Does anyone know, or know where I might find, the name of the people who owned and/or ran The Red Lion in the 1960s and 70s? I only have the first name "Gwen" to go on. Thank you.
