Railway Terrace, Bordesley

Hello everyone

Many years have passed since I commuted into the city centre on the line through Bordesley. Little did I know at the time that somewhere near the arches below me lived, next door to each other, the two sisters of my great grandfather. In the 1891 census, their addresses were 4 and 6 Railway Terrace, Howden Road. The younger of the two married the boy from no 3 so that's what I call a close community. Howden Road now appears to be a series of small businesses occupying the arches while there is no sign of the cottages that once stood nearby.

Does anyone know anything about Railway Terrace? I would love to track down any surviving photographs if such exist.

Funnily enough I drove within a few yards of the site a couple of weeks ago when I came down from North Yorkshire (where I've lived for 19 years) with my son. We took the A45 in on our way to Edgbaston cricket ground to watch Warwickshire play. I couldn't believe how the road system has changed around there in the last few years. (Not sure how I would find my old parking place if I come back to St. Andrews.)

I look forward to hearing from anyone with the usual excellent and helpful support that this great forum tends to produce.

Regards to all,

Roger.

Are you sure it is Howden road. don't claim to know the area very well, but it does not come up in google maps today, and does not seem to be listed in Kellys for 1900, 1921,1940 or 1973

This is Lawden Road, on the right is the railway that leads in to Bordesley Station. In the distance, notice the bridge, just under the bridge on the right there used to be a small row of terraced houses that were derelict in the 50's, I can recall playing in them at the time.

I've just found this on the Aston Registration 1891 street index:
Railway Terrace Lawden Road

RG 12/240964-65
So it looks like there was a Railway Terrace in Lawden Road.

I also spotted this for 1891:
1 Railway Terrace Lawden Road,1,Charles W Bell,Head,W,34,,Mchanic Genrl M/c Repr,Employed,Aston Warwickshire

It looks like these were the people inhabiting 4 and 6 Railway Terrace Lawden Road in the 1891 census. Can you identify your forbears among them?
