My Great Grandfather Samuel Usherwood is shown on the 1881 census as a Railway Foreman with Gnw - does anyone have any info about Gnw? In 1891 he is an Engine Driver but there is no company/railway mentioned. Google is no help so come on you Brummies!

Having looked at the census scan I'm not convinced it's GNW, I think it may be LNW which was the London & North Western Railway , formed in 1846, by the amalgamation of the London & Birmingham and the Grand Junction Railways and eventually became part of the London Midland Scottish Railway.

Thank you all for helping out. I was using a transcript so will check out the original next time I'm at my local library. Makes more sense as fireman if he went on to become an engine driver!
