What is the definition of a "ragged school"? Victor Skipp, in his book The Making of Victorian Birmingham refers to ragged schools and said that some came under the category of "freestanding schools established by individual benefactors". Locations included Well Lane, Penn St, Slaney St, Vale St, Queen St, Staniforth St & Windmill St. Reference is made to St Phillips Ragged School in Lichfield St, which I would infer from the capital letters used in the text meant that that was the formal title of the school, as distinct from a title imposed retrospectively. The name was hardly imbued with aspiration!
