Hi Mike .

Many thanks for your reply. i was very surprised when you said it was a housing estate. i suppose this was to do with the cut backs. Do you know when exactly it was made into a housing estate?

I must comment on the picture of the gate house cell because when I was on duty at the guard house one winter night whilst on the gate I was told to expect the red caps (mlitary police) and make sure to check the credentials of the occupants who were on board. They were bringing in a prisoner for holding who had gone awol. Lo and behold it was a guy whom I knew from Steward St - his name was Billy Griffiths and we went to Steward Street School and were in the same class.

After my three hours on duty and my rest bite we would change over duties and I had to check on the prisoner in the cell every hour. Because I knew Billy I used to help him out with a few things behind the sergeant's back.

I thought I would like to mention that because our friend on the forum downloaded the cracking pictures the other day. As soon I saw the prison cell behind the door I immediately thought of Billy Griffiths - ginger-haired Billy whom I had behind that door so many years ago. I never forgot the place nor Billy. As he was a few years older than me, i don't suppose he is still around. A lot or most of my long lost friends from years ago have died or got killed.

Many thanks, guys. Best wishes.

Hello fella's...good to see interest in the old airfield, I've been around every inch of the site for over 20 years now(I'm 40) I've loads of details/maps/books/photo's and secret places not really seen by most folk ;) around and about this great site.... I live just a stones throw away and am happy to answer any questions on the site (if I can)
simon@tjs.com.au is my email ...I've not long returned from living in Oz so I still have my Aussie email although I am Brummie by heart.. born in The Sorrento Hospital Sparkbrook =)
Cheers Simon.

Cheers Dave.... just stumbled on this site, hope I can be of some use... did you work on the airfield??
Simon

Like you mentioned Dave the area has changed a bit recently( Tesco's) but basically its the opp end of the airfield to the Guardroom you can turn left or right but best is to go down the 'mile straight' which is on the west side, towards the canal over the bridge at the end and turn right at the crossroads towards Fradley village, look for the church its just opposite on the corner :) inside the church yard you will find war graves of both Allied and German aircrew.
Cheers Simon.

Tailgunner found the Memorial, have been in the churchyard opposite before, also had a look near to Tesco's Thanks

You should of said Dave I could of met you up there for a quick look around :(... another day eh, just give me a day or so's notice and bring your camera ;)
Cheers Simon
