Its sad that all these pubs are closing down.i think more pubs will close, with this no smoking policy.
I for one as a smoker object to pay top prices for beer and stand out side in all weathers.
What happened to the The Snug,GentsOnly.Smoking Room, lounge them days you had a choice but not no more. So what do you think of that Frothblower
The pub in the picture Fox and Grapes was a good watering hole, the landlady who had the pub cold not live upstairs because the building was unsafe :D

I Agree With You Mossy.since The No Smoking Ban. I Have Seen A Group Of People .some Smoke .some Don't.who Go To A Club Where I Go And Play Bingo.afterwards They Would All Stay For The Free And Easy And Enjoy Themselves.but Not Now.after The Bingo.they All Leave The Club,
Where Are All The People Who Said They Would Use The Clubs And Pubs When The Smoking Ban Comes Into Force.?
I Don't See Any Difference .only Less People.
From What I See Things Are Getting Worse.
Even The People Who Don't Smoke Are Going Outside To Find A Bit Of Company With The Smokers.
Shame Winston Churchill Was'nt Still Around.he Would Probably Tell The Goverment What To Do With Their Ban.
We Know It's Not Good For Us But Neither Is Drinking.eating The So-called Wrong Food.using Cars.planes. Leaving Our Carbon Footprint Every Where.
Live And Let Live.

As A present Licensee I can tell you first hand what is happening to all the pubs.
A. The smoking ban, I have lost about £2,000 a week since it came into force. But will the Brewery help me ? Not on your life they hack my beer prices up for the slightest reason, wont even consider a rent reduction and have even taken my discount off my best selling beer. When I asked why........ the answer in not so many words was ' cause we can !!!!!!!!
I am verging on Bankruptcy, I have an IVA in progress.......... do they care, does the government care that I ploughed my redundancy money into my business and I'm going down the Swannee because of their often silly petty legislation? NOT ON YOUR NELLY.
B.The brewery's selling to supermarkets and the like at a quarter of what they charge me for! I have two managed houses around me and they sell a pint at a cheaper price that what I can buy it in for ............. and to add insult to injury off the same Brewery that I have to buy mine off.
Brewery's sell to the social club at hugely discounted prices, why they are not supposed to make a profit, only running expences. One club not so far from me has a £5,000 a year window cleaning bill. Guess what, there aint a window in the place !!!!!!!!!!
I cannot shop around I am tied to the Brewery also have Brulines on my pipes which are linked direct to the Brewery so they can tell if I'd bought in or not!
My utillity bills have trippled in less than 18 months, gas & leccy is over £2,000 a month, and Severn Trent are now charging me an extra 40% because I have 3 drains on my carpark that take the rain water away!!! The mind boggles.
So my friends this is why a lot of pubs are dissappearing because no-one cares, not the breweries and certainly not the government. And certainly not the customers who will go to where the beer is cheaper or like you stay at home now.
C. I think there is a local government/ government conspiricy to close all pubs down eventually, easier policing if there's no pubs. They blame the Licensee's for everything that goes on in the local vacinity. Ie., underage drinking, vandalisum, drugs, you name it its our fault. I I.D. everyone under 25 let alone 21 I dont do 18 or 21 birthday parties.
Most Licensee's that I know do the same, this is our lively hood and our home too why would we jepordise that for underage drinkers or druggies?
When I'm gone there will be low rise flats and houses built on here, like there have been on all the other 9 pubs that surrounded me when I first came here 17 years ago.
Who will care? No-one I guess!

Why are the breweries aloud to get away with it, it's like day light robbery, it looks like the days of a pub on every corner are going and going fast, and I know what you mean about the pubs on chelmsly wood shutting down when we lived there we used to go to the Yeoman and it was a brilliant place we had so many laughs there but then the druggies arrived and everyone stopped using there and eventually it was closed and there are houses there now, where we live now in yardley my husband uses the Dovecote but I'm afraid since the gaffer left and the new one arrived it has totally changed there are fights there and a lot of drug taking, my husband said its only a matter of time until that closes, but what happens then the yobs go and try to spoil the next pub and its only if the gaffer is a good one that pub dosn't get ruined.

Judei i feel sorry for publicans with this dilema, theirs a pub here in Weston where the gaffer lets people smoke in the pub he says that if he did not he would have to close down, and if the fine him he will still have to close down,he says bring em on down

Mossy;)

Hi Mossy, its a downward slide I'm afraid. I dont see no end to it either its £2,500 fine if were caught allowing someone to smoke in the premises. I cant even pay my bills let alone fines!
Where abouts in Weston do you live My sister moved to Worle about 11 years ago hates coming up to Brum nowadays.

I didn't ask about the wrongs and rights of the smoking ban, just to say it's a shame pubs are closing.
I would just like to add, their are lots of new faces in my watering hole enjoying a drink in a clean atmosphere:)

Mossy, if the landlord you have mentioned turns a blind eye to the smoking ban, how long before he turns a blind eye to drug dealing and thuggish behaviour, which has driven a lot of people away from the pubs in the first place.
People HAVE the right to feel safe to visit a public place and not be intimidated by groups of yobs who believe they can behave in any way they wish.
I don't have an answer to saving our pubs, but one way that might work for me would be the abilty to get served without fighting my way through a crowd of "dedicated" drinkers who think they may miss out on something if they moved away from the bar.
In some States in America everyone who wants a drink must be seated, it stops a lot of overcrowding.;)

Chelmsley Pubs

Mariew, I've lived on Chelmsley Wood since I was a small child, in my time we've lost the Happy Trooper, the Hiker, the Yeoman, the Friendly Inn, the Southern Cross, the Roundhouse and the Trusty Servant. The local pub is a dying trade unfortunately a thing of the past like so many good things.:| Sadly I have not got a photo of any of these pubs, although the Friendly is still standing as a old peoples home.

Hello Carl1964 Yes I know all of these pubs and it is so sad that they have all dissapeared but it's getting the same everywhere now, on a happier note the Centurion is still there we used to use there when we lived in westham house.

Hi Carl1964, you forgot The Merrymaker and the Woodsman they have gone too.
Frothblower, your missing the point my friend, Pubs are closing not just because of the smoking ban (thats not helped in anyway) but because of the greedyness of the Breweries, the government taxing the hell out of alcohol and all the unnescary legislation that they have brought in! Spineless Publicans dont help either, to scared to do their job properly or basically couldn't give a .....
I have a Flourets magazine (Public House sales and lets) every other month, in the last one over 70% of the Pubs up for grabs were boarded up.
The drug and hooligan culture is upon us I'm afraid, I have battled to keep this pub a drug free zone, but I have had more problems here in the last 6 months than I have had in 17 years. I cant be expected to stand guard in the Mens loo to prevent this but its what the police expect me to do.
Give it 10 years and pubs will be few and far between.

PS I love the smoking ban, dont go upstairs now stinking of fags, dont have to wash my hair everyday either and I dont smoke, gave it up when I came here and have not smoked since, well a couple of times when I've gotten drunk but it made me so ill it just reinforces the fact I hate smoking! Even thought its loosing me money!:(

Hi Jude: Glad to hear that you support the smoking ban Jude. It's like living in a totally different world for you publicans now. The drug situation is very frightening indeed and it's such hard work for businesses to keep a watch on activities of drug dealing on their premises. Good luck Jude.

Billc, you are perfectly correct in what you say,i couldnt have put it better myself,
I know Frothblower said he wants to campaign to keep pubs open,i only stated one of th reasons why pubs are closing, thats apart from people who sit in a pub with a couple pints all night, and the ones walk in at ten oclock and moan about every thing:)

The Club I Used To Use Closed Down Because Of .
A, The Area .people Being Mugged.cars Vanderlised.
B, The Goverment Would Put The Price Of Drinks Up In Their Budget.then The Brewery Do The Same.then The Club Has To Pass The Rises On To The Members. Loyal Members Would Try And Keep The Club Going.but A Lot Of The Members Moved Out The Area And Just Waited For The Club To Close Down And They Would Get Their Payout From The Sale Of The Club.
C, A Lot Of Members Would Use The Club Two Or Three Times A Week.and Sit There All Night With A Glass Of Pop.
It's A Matter Of Time When We Will Have To Stop At Home And Drink Out Of Cans And End Up Living In The Shed.where We Can Smoke And Drink.and Relax.
When All The Clubs And Pubs Have Gone.the Goverment And Brewerys Will Hike Up The Price Of Canned Beer.wine.tobacco.etc.etc.
I'M GOING IN THE SHED NOW.

Billc and mossy, you have hit the nail on the head!
Prior to the buget in the earlier part of this year I hadn't put my prices up at all, not by a penny, for nigh on 3 years. Yet from Nov 06 to March 07 I had 17 price increases then the buget came out and both my stsocktaker and my accountant made me put my prices up, the both wanted at least 20p a pint to sustain the price increases. I didnt want to because I know how fickle customers are. Eventually I increased by10p across the board, Hell, you'd have thought I'd have commited murder. The abuse I got was unbelievable I ended up in tears. And for people who know me that is just not me!
Your right about so called loyal customers, dont come in till 10-30/45ish then have the nerve to ask why the disco's not on ........ doh ......... no customers sent the DJ and Staff home at 10pm been open since 8pm no good playing to an empty room!!!!
Well, let me tell you between the Government, the brewery and the druggies I'm not long for this place I've had enough and if I can sell my lease on I'm outta here. See how long this places keeps open then!
Bitter you bet your sweet ass I am! £30,000 and my home lost through no fault of my own!
Gissa job anyone!

Jude im sorry to hear dilemma the pub game has always been a hard game, and no doubt if you can get out of it amicably good for you,but rest assured the pub will ceased to be

So come on Frothblower get you and your muckers down to Judes pub and spend a few bob,if your campaign is to succeed its only the punters that keep these pub afloat ;) when i dont down to my local village pub for a couple of nights somebody comes to see if im ok,im a good punter im suppose, always enjoyed a tot.
