Pub name?

terryb18

Gone but not forgotten R.I.P.
I have been asked what is/was the name of the pub on the corner of Bromsgrove St and Essex St. I don't know, but I'm sure there must be someone here who does. Help.

Terry

P.S. I have looked on street view, but unfortunately no pictures.

Cheers Astonian. I have texted my friend who asked the question. Should keep him happy.:D

I might be sticking my neck out here but, I can't ever remember a pub on the corner of Essex Street & Bromsgrove St.

As Astonian says the Australian bar (now renamed) is indeed on Bromsgrove Street but that is on the corner of Hurst Street and not Essex Street.

The only thing I could find for Essex Street was in the 1937 Kelly's and was a beer retailer at No 8 that was on or near to the corner of Bromsgrove Street. In the later 1950 edition there is no sign or mention of it.

Phil

Phil is right. I wonder though whether they meant the corner with Lower essex st, in which case it would be the Rose & Crown

Mike

Silly me the beer retailer I quoted at no 8 Essex street was in fact Lower Essex Street as I checked out Essex St, Lower Essex St and Bromsgrove St. I don't know my uppers from my lowers.

Would that in fact be what become the Rose & Crown you mention? As I have no mention of a Rose & Crown in the Kelly's directories that I have.

the one I looked in was the 1940 kellys, and , by chance got it first go. Thr Rose and crown was nos 134-135 Bromsgrove st, and as the next firm on the other side of the junction was 136-141 (Mye Motors- what a name!) it seems to have actually been on the corner. No 8 Lower Essex St is given as the Lamp Tavern
Mike

hi mike
i think that lamp tavern was the little pub on the corner
of a little side rd thats takes you through to pershore street
its been many years since i have been into the city of
of birmingham , i go into to brum quite often
but i never venture into the city since i left the city center
i think it changed its name many years ago if i am thinking where it is . have a good day mike ,
best wishes astonian ;;;

Evans & Kitchen car dealers were on the corner of Bromsgrove St/Lower Essex St, i think it was The Rose & Crown pub next door. Len.

The building remains though in a derelict state but with sufficient of its former glory and decorative features very visible - it's on the south western corner. It is scheduled for retention and I believe it and its surrounds are owned by developer Crosby who built Southside and the i-Land developments on the opposite corners. We were told by a Crosby agent that the facade would be incorporated within the new block.

thanks for the info max...dont surpose you know if they are gutting the inside of the building do you....i took pics of it a couple of years back...

No sorry, we didn't get into such details. The context was that my wife and I were viewing flats in i-Land with a view to purchase and we were trying to decide between one overlooking Bromsgrove St and another overlooking Essex Street. It was while we were talking about this that the topic came up.

Judging from their other developments down John Bright Street etc, it is just the facade that gets incorporated (and rather odd it tends to look).

Is this it, i've always admired it....

Sure is! Obviously built as a hotel rather than just as a pub. I bet there is (or was) some nice period fittings within. It shows on the 1902 OS map as a "PH"; don't know about earlier.

I'm at a loss to understand when Brum has lost so much in the past that buildings such as this are left to rot!.

Is it noisy living in Chinatown or do you enjoy it?, i wouldn't mind it myself but you hear so much latelty about pub noise etc. I think there's a report on the inside out prog relating to City Centre living including the problems regarding the spotted dog in Digbeth (might be tonight).

Well brumgum, we were actually seeking a contrast from where we live most of the time in rural south Oxfordshire so a modicum of urban excitement was part of the package. Birmingham is my home town but that was back in the 50s. Essex Street is a little off the track so we are spared the wildest aspects of Sodom & Gomorrah in neighbouring streets so the answer is "yes-ish" to the first part and definitely "yes" to the second.

hi brummgum and thank you for that pic...it saddens me to see this building in such a sorry state and i will be trying to find out exactly what is to become of it....of course i agree that the building itself should be preserved but i also think that the interia with all its orginal fixtures and fittings should also be held in the same high regard as once they have been ripped out and skipped they will never be able to be replaced...im afraid this type of work is being carried out all to often on our historical buildings...maybe the powers that be think it will placate us and keep us happy...well im afraid i dont work with me... i will get back to you when and if i manage to find anything more out...

I thought Evans & Kitchen were on the opposite side. Was the Rose and Crown the pub on the corner ?

Lyn, my Grandparents met in a pub off Spring Hill , my Nan was a barmaid in the Coach and Horses in the Twenties and if you click on Spring Hill on this site it's the bottom picture. I owe my life to pub's then...oh dear...
