Pub Licences

I have bought some credits for this site and have found some great info on it, but would like a little help if someone can do it.

There are transfers of licences to and from Abel Taylor. Here are a few examples

5 October 1877 Windsor Castle Hockley Hill from Abel to Thomas Baker
5 October 1877 Grande Turke, Ludgate Hill from???? to Abel
9 April 1877 Australian Arms, Sparkbrook from Abel to Edward Wainwright
3 October 1873 Ryland Arms, Ryland Street to Laura Parton from Abel

Is there anywhere else I can find further information on

Thanks

Carol

If you have access to Kelly's directory you should be able to see who was listed at each pub year by year. That will not give dates. I suspect that the papers are the best bet for dates as they will record the licensing court meetings.

Carolina,
on 1881 census the Grand Turk is shown as 82-83 Hockley hill, the head is a Barman called George smith, at number 88 there is a Thomas Baker a Coffee shop manager but also at the address is Mary .Baker states his daughter who is a barmaid, possibly his sister as Thomas is 25 and she is 21.

1871 Ryland Arms, upper ryland road.
Laura Parton age 50 licensed Victualler and Thomas , son, age 20.

Jukebox I have tried to put my Birmingham library membership number into InfoTrac but its not recognised and access denied. I am a member of Ancestry. Thanks Carol

It looks as though the newspaper had got some of the things wrong as I have just had another look and it definitely says Grand Turk Ludgate Hill. Hockley Hill sounds more feasible as on the cover Smudger Smiths' book shows Grand Turk.

Another one is Birmingham Daily Post.Birmingham Horse in Bromsgrove Street October 1870 Abel transferred to Charles Nobbins

Yes 81-82 Hockley hill was the Grand Turk. Ludgate Hill, at least then, did not go as high in numbers as the 80s

Carol - regarding my post no 4 - I had assumed (incorrectly!) that as your location is shown as Stourport you would be a member of Worcester Libraries. Lindyloo's link in post 8 should work if you have a Birmingham library number.
