PTE HENRY BYARD 18463 WORCESTERSHIRE REGIMENT

MILLS

master brummie
Trying to find Henry in the 1911 Census.
Arrived in France 19, July 1915.
Wounded around June 1916, listed missing June 1918. On Pension record identified "assumed dead between 11 /17 April 1918 with 2nd Battalion". Date of birth 12 Sept., 1887 and widow is Harriett Susan of 20, Erasmus Rd., Sparkbrook. Ties in with age given on a medical card in Feb., 1916 age 30 years and 1891 Census. He is also identified as Roman Catholic.

Born Q4, 1885 Birmingham.
Baptism: 29 Apr., 1887. Father Henrici and Mother Matildae.
Married Harriett Susan Byfield Q4, 1916.

1891 Census: Matilda (M), Amy, Elizabeth, Hannah, Emily, HENRY. Princip St. 4 court 7 House, St Mary's.
1911 Census: Matilda, Emily, HENRY, Ernest. 1 Ct 1 House, Farm St., Hockley.

Birth and baptism dates could be wrong so if others can find dates that tie in with the Pension record of 12 September, 1887 that would be good.

Appreciate help in finding the missing 1901 Census.

Thank you.

Just checking the CWGC site and there is a Private Henry Byard, service number 18463 died 13 April 1918. Buried or Commemorated in Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium. Worcestershire Regiment 2nd. Bn. Pressume this is the same Henry

On the 1911 census Matilda states she is a widow. Also (although crossed out) she has entered that she was married for 12 years, had 8 children, 6 who are alive at 19011, 2 who have died.

On the 1881 census, the name is transcribed as Brand, Living at 3 Ct. 20 Lancaster St. B'Ham. with three daughters.

Matilda Byard appears to remarry twice, in 1891 to Thomas Feeney and to Thomas Rooker in 1912. On both marriages she marries under the name Byard. Her son Ernest was reg. as Ernest Feeney, so why wasn't she listed as Feeney on her marriage to Thomas Rooker?

I can't find any of them in 1901, so I wonder if her omission has something to do with this anomaly.

Success! I think.

They appear to be listed under the name of Hickman on Smith St, Matilda as wife of an Albert, no marriage, with Hannah, Emily, Henry (Harry) and Ernest.

A fortunate find, her daughter, Elizabeth, did marry an Albert Hickman and I was looking for her. Don't know if the 2 Alberts were related.

Janice,

Looks like both are not my man then. As I said on his Pension card his birthday is 12 September, 1887 which I assumed might be wrong because I could find any record for a birth in 1887. So search goes on.

MWS,

Yes, all seems to match, except he's called Harry but again this is not unusual. Again his age suggests birth 1884/5 which ties in with my assumption, but Janice seems to have proved them wrong. So I am back to a birth of 1887 which is shown on his Pension card.

So any comment/thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

David

The maiden name of the Matilda from post #1 was Oldfield, so the second birth posted by Janice would be the correct one. His listed age varies on the censuses.

Matilda married a George Henry Byard, reg. Jun 1875 Bham.

MWS,

I knew that!!! Just proves you should always stop and think! I'd written it down, that's why I guessed the Pension card had the wrong date.

Must have been a senior moment. In my defense I was watching an auction on line.

Anyway thank you for completing my missing 1901 census.

Hi St Chad’s Cathedral has a record of some of the local WW1 Catholic men remembered by the monument in the Cathedral - there are copies of letters written by some men - you can contact the cathedral by email I think it’s: stchadscathedral@rcaob.org.uk
