Prisoners Of War In Klagenfurt Austria WW2

Born a Brummie
I'm not sure if I am posting in the correct place, if not please feel free to move me ;)

My Mother worked in occupied Austria from 1946-1950.
I was wondering if anyone here was posted there during this time.

She worked in the Landhaus in Klagenfurt for a British Officer. This was part of the British Section.

I have many photographs of her time there.

Rowan, that is very interesting about your Mother serving in Austria. We have a very close friend of many years who is Austrian. His mother is 90 and is still alive and lives near Klagenfurt where his family was from. I have heard several stories of how difficult it was both during anfter the war in Austria.
I hope that you find someone with a true connection.

My eldest brother Peter, who attended King Edward's Grammar at Five Ways, went on a school trip in l951 to Klagenfurt and also Vienna. Not long after the war. It is very beautiful in that area.

Lindwurm Fountain Austria

I remember this being lit up and I was terrified of it :(

This was where my Mother worked

I am interested in Klagenfurt Austria in the mid 1940's as my Mother worked there after the war.

I was browsing Google for Klagenfurt and came across this interesting site.

KLAGENFURT PRISONERS.
A history of BERNARD CASHMORE born ASTON 1906 taken prisoner in 1941.

There maybe other Brummies there too.

Hope I have posted in the correct place

Rowan,

Handy that we have a couple connections between Klagenfurt and Brum - your mother and Bernard CASHMORE - I'm sure there are others. I can't provide a link with Klagenfurt, but I can with Graz (also in Austria) via my history of Genton & Kessler, whose original premises were close to Bingley Hall. (Julius KESSLER was born in Graz).

Maurice, my Mother worked in Klagenfurt, she was a secretary for a C in C with the Army. She mentioned the D.P (Displaced People) and how sad and awful it was.

My brother & I, as children, went over to Austria traveling on the Army train for 3 days. I have very fond memories of Austria such a beautiful place.

Beautiful indeed, Rowan, though sadly I have never managed to stay there for even one night. But I've driven from the north eastern Italian border via minor roads to Germany on two occasions en route to my eldest son's house in Brussels, and I have two friends who live in Vienna who occasionally send me photographs. Now I've reached 80 that sort of long distance driving is a bit too much :-)
