Hello,

Does anybody know where Princess Street may have been located around 1828?

I have a burial record of a child of one of my ancestors at the Chapelry of Saint Mary which I believe was in Whittall Street. This also I believe was a Roman Catholic church. This branch of the family did come from Ireland around 1820's. The address on the burial record is Princess Street.

I have located the Chapelry of Saint Mary in Whittall Street on a map, but cannot see any Princess Street. There is a Princip Street near by, unless this is the street where they lived at the time, which has been transcribed incorrectly.

It is Princip Street. The original is on Ancestry and I will post it when I am back on my laptop.

Strangely on the 1841 census it is listed as Princess St, between Shadwell St and Baggot St, so the same road. On the 1839 map it is listed as Prinsep St (something to do with how they used to write double ss perhaps?)...

st marys was a church of england church...i would have thought that princess st is an error and should read princip st and that was where the person who died lived

That's how double s used to be written...

...so that could be read as Princess. There is a newspaper article in the Bham Journal 27 Feb 1847 in regards a William Pearson, a provision dealer of Princess St and and on the 1841 census there is a William Pearson living on Princess St (between Shadwell St & Baggot St).

Either way it's still modern Princip St.
