PREECE. I am researching FRED, HENRY (HARRY?), FLORENCE (FLORRIE), ROBERT, ELSIE, JAMES (Jim - my father who went to Canada), FRANK and RICHARD- all listed on the 1911 Census as living at 126 Nelson Road, Handsworth. Would like to hear from any offspring or anyone that knew of them. Father Fred and eldest son Fred both worked at a Cycle Manufacturers (assume it was Raleigh ?) at the time of 1911 census. Mother registered as Lizzie Preece born in London. Can't find any birth certificates for these children (except Elsie who later married a Knibb) or marriage certificate for the parents. Frederick Preece (father)'s roots were possibly Kinver or Enville. posted by Susan Preece

i wonder if this is your family in 1901

alfred preece 31
lizzie 25
frederick 5
harry 3
florence 1 it states all born bham

they were living great brook st. bham

also found a birth harry preece 1898 oct-dec aston 6d 286

PREECE. Thanks SO much for your quick response to my quest - much apreciated! I had this family down as a possibility and ignored it because Alfred Preece is not the name I am looking for. However, there is a strong possibility now that Lizzie could have first married Alfred and then, for some reason, went to live with Frederick and had 5 further children, taking the kids from her relationship with Alfred with her. Maybe Alfred died. I am thinking this because the ages you quote for 1901 match the ages on the 1911 census where it shows five further children born at that time: Robert 8, Elsie 5, James 3, Frank 2, and Richard 1 years old. What I can't understand is why their are no birth certs for the kids (save one: Elsie which names Elizabeth Preece nee Meredith as her mother and Frederick Preece as her father. So I know this to be correct but cannot find a marriage cert for her parents or birth certs for any of the other kids). Even the Birmingham Record office say its a mystery.

hi susan

perhaps the census officer thought they said alfred when he said fred! just a possibility

i have given harrys birth record. i have seen one for a thomas frederick born in aston right date which could be frederick juniors cert. will have another look when i can.

Hi Sheera and thanks !! Its a possibility I suppose that he could have said Fred and the enumerator thought he said Alfred. Especially as she is registered as Elizabeth on Elsie's birth cert but listed as Lizzie on the census. I would have thought that they would have given their formal names on such a document. Not said Fred and Lizzie. But who knows? Its quite a possibility. I know that Fred jnr used to spend a lot of time in The Yenton pub (I got this from Jenny Nichol in Canada as her aunt was married to Fred jnr - the eldest of all the kids.

Hello Shera - just to to say that the Harry you mention 1898 has a father called Samuel and mother called called Mary Ann so I am discounting this one entirely. Just thought I would tell you this quickly before you go to any trouble.

pity about harry!

ive found a weird thing

marriage elizabeth meredith bham 1895 jul-sep 6d 31

marriage fred preece bham 1895 jul-sep 6d 285

sorry to add to the confusion but its a bit of a coincidence

what does anyone else think?

Shere - Now I think we are cooking with gas! I will do a research on this and get back to you. If it is them well done you.

Susan,

Did your parents attend All Souls Church on Wenlock Road? I can certainly remember a Mrs Preece who was very friendly with my mother Ethel Bryant (lived on The Broadway).

Regards,

Big Gee

Hello Big Gee. Afraid that I cant say whether they did or not. I don't think so as my father (Jim Preece) lived in Canada from the 1950's and definately was not religious (far from it) but one of his sisters Elsie Preece was extremely religious although she was Mrs Knibb and lived in Wellhead Road, Perry Barr. I don't know about any other member of the Preece family because I am just starting to research them.

Hi again Shera. I don't know how I missed this connection. I am certain you are right! Where did you research the info because I checked on the free BDM and couldnt get the connection? It would be useful to know. Have sent off for the certificates to see if it is indeed the right couple.

youve worried me now, sending for the certificates. its so expensive and i will feel responsible if its no good

i looked through the full listings of marriages on ancestry quarter by quarter in the appropriate years. i dont know whether it is correct as it should be the same reference number but good luck and let me know!!

don't worry - any lead is good because I had completely ran out of them after months and months of getting nowhere. I have a gut feeling youhave stumbled upon something. Crossed fingers its right then I can move forward with the tree.

Susan/Shera

On FreeBMD a Postem has been added to that marriage entry --

Great Grandfather to Helen Kathleen Westley (nee Edwards) living in Birmingham (C) 2008

Fred Preece spouse is Alice Annie Preece

Looks like Redfern is her maiden name, assuming she is correct

this is what im worried about but there is also the marriage of elizabeth meredith for the same quarter so i was only suggesting looking into it. i fear susan has wasted her money. :(

Shera, if i had found those two entries i would have thought exactly the same as you, a mis-transcription and suggested the same. As for that Postem, she could be wrong, she didn't say "I have the cert etc", that's why they ask you to provide your evidence when adding a postem, none of us are perfect

I hope that Susan is getting these certs from B'ham record office ???? They are very helpful if given BOTH names of the couple on the marriage cert....they will NOT charge for the certs if the names do not match.....

Margaret.

Hi Bren - thanks for the Fred v Alice idea but I know for certain this is incorrect as Frederick married Alice Gertrude Venville and I have their marriage cert but prior to that he was VERY briefly married at a very young age to a Marny Fray and a child was born of that union in the Bristol area. I can't track that child from its birth cert so I assume he was adopted out in 1917 or name changed on re-marriage by Marny Fray.

Yes, getting info from B'ham office - no worries. Will let you know if we are on the right track in due course. Thanks to both of you.

Hi Brend

They were not the right ones (unfortunately) but it was worth looking up and thank you for that. Sue

Gosh is it really ten years since I last logged in here ? Meanwhile the search was solved and this is for anyone out there who is chasing the same family and for the record. For reasons we may never know, all the Preece family were born Spendelow and changed their names verbally to Preece. This was eventually ascertained by the Birmingham GRO.
