My late grandfather worked in such a facility run by the Corporation; prior to and during the second war. Has anyone any recollection or evidence of such an enterprise. Or even perhaps where to look.
His name was William Whitehead and he died in 1944.
If it's any help, there was a Home Guard company based in or near the facility.
Thanks,
R

There is a sub-station in upper trinity street with a large depiction of the birmingham coat of arms above the doors.is this of any help?

Many thanks BobS. I'm not sure what I'm actually looking for. My grandfather was an attendant - whatever that is?
I'll look it out.

Bob, I think I've found it with your help. Upper trinity street, opposite what was Bordesley Cattle station. If you along the street on google maps street view (it shows approx no. 77) and voila there it is! Well it's how you described it. Many years ago my aunt took my mother to try and find it - but the got sort of lost around the Birds custards factory.
I actually live in Luton - so this wonderful www is a great boon - especially this street view facility.
I worked in the sort of area in 1970 (I was there when they announced the Beatles were splitting up) at a small fabrication unit - making pressed steel cases for electric heaters I think. The bloke who's business it was - Charlie Barnett I think. It was further into Birmingham city that Upper trinity street. I remember I had to walk past the birmingham hide and bone company factory. What a stink.
Regards,
Roger

Roger that would be" The Sweet Smell Of New Canal St "on a hot summer day. Dek
That smell still lingers where it shouldn't.
Talking of smells from around you youth in Brum - the smell of "burning" coffee from the custard factory and the smell around my old scholl - Yardley grammar - from the Lucas battery works - ooh that sulphur.

regards,

R
