Hi

I am desperately trying to track down William Frederick Powell, father of William Edward Powell.

Only confirmed details I have are
  • Occupation was Sadler
  • Deceased by December 1918
  • Was the father of William Edward Powell (Born approx. 1876)
Have tried looking at censuses but am having difficulty in determining the correct record.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Andrea :)

As William Frederick was a sadler, there is possibility they lived in the Walsall area.

Have you any ideas where William Edward was born. There are a couple of entriesin the Midlands, one in Wolverhampton 1874 and the other Kings Norton 1875

Nope no confirmed details of where he was born although the records regarding his 'incarceration' at the Industrial School seem to suggest Birmingham.

Was there a strong Walsall connection with Sadlers then?

Possibly nothing but here is an entry from the 1904 Staffs Directory, for Penkridge:

Powell William, saddler, Market street

Walsall Football Team are knows as the Sadlers. Walsall was the area where saddles and other leather goods were made (a bit like Sheffield and cutlery)

Names not quite to match but worth a thought.

1881 6 Avon place Theodore Street Aston

Frederick Powell age 30 Harness maker
Emma age 30 wife
William E age 5
Annie age 2
Elizabeth 6 months all born birmingham

1901 Heneage street,
William Edwin Powell age 24 Ion and steel striker
Ellen age 23
William Edwin age 3 months
Frederick age 53 ,Saddler
Emma age 54
all born birmingham.

Checking the girls on the 1891 I have found in an industrial school in Somerset.
Elizabeth Powell age 13 b. Birmingham and Annie Powell b. birmingham age 10,I think they may be the sisters of the above William and their ages have been swapped in error.

Hi all

Thanks again for your help.

6 Avon Place is a definite strong possibility as I have checked electoral records for 1920 and have William Edward Powell living at 2 Avon Place off Theodore Street. They seem to have been creatures of habit so I wouldn't be at all surprised to find out that he had moved back there.

I will also check to see if I can find a record of William's wife Emma dying as we known from his 1918 marriage certificate he was a widower.

I also appear to have found a relative of Elizabeth (William's sister) through a genealogy site who it appears emigrated in later years to Australia so hopefully they might be helpful with information.

Cheers Andrea
