Piggotts and Son, Spring Hill

What a great picture. Thomas Piggott & Co. was founded back in 1822 and rapidly expanded including many takeovers. By the 1880s sites included:
  • Spring Hill Works (Gas engineers, ironfounders, boiler, bridge, girder and gasholder makers).
  • Atlas Works, Oozells Street (Engine builders, hydraulic and general engineers, coppersmiths and ironfounders. Note: see also Atlas Engine Co and Duvallon and Lloyd).
  • Hooper Street Works (waterworks engineers, boiler makers).
The company continued through many changes of ownership. The Spring Hill works closed in 1934.

The Gas holder is a reminder of what used to be such a common feature in towns all over the country.
